Job Description - Director of Cloud and Automation (240009NN)

The

Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (EOTSS)

is the state’s lead office for information technology. We provide enterprise level information technology services including: network management and security; computer operations; application hosting; desktop provisioning and management; and, modern and responsive digital services to 40,000 internal stakeholders plus the residents, business owners and visitors to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

is seeking to hire a

Director of Cloud and Automation . The

Director of Cloud and Automation

will lead the strategic planning, implementation, and management of the company's cloud infrastructure and automation frameworks. This role involves overseeing cloud operations to ensure optimal performance, security, and cost-efficiency. The

Director

will work closely with executive leadership and various departments to align cloud strategies with business goals, driving innovation and operational excellence. This role reports into the Deputy COO of Hosting Services.

The primary work location for this role will be the Massachusetts Information Technology Center,

200 Arlington Street, Chelsea, MA 02150 . The work schedule for this position is

Monday through Friday, 8:30AM to 4:30PM EST.

This position would be expected to follow a

hybrid

model of reporting to work that combines in-office workdays and work from home days as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

Develop and execute a comprehensive cloud strategy aligned with business objectives. Lead the adoption of cloud-native technologies and best practices.

Cloud Operations Management:

Oversee day-to-day cloud operations, ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability. Implement and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans.

Cloud Engineering/Construction:

Design and construct scalable, reliable, and secure cloud architectures. Oversee the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of cloud-based solutions. Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) to automate the provisioning and management of cloud resources. Develop and manage cloud-native applications using microservices architecture. Ensure proper configuration and optimization of cloud resources for cost efficiency. Integrate cloud services with existing IT infrastructure and applications.

Automation and DevOps:

Develop and implement automation strategies to streamline operations and improve efficiency. Oversee CI/CD pipeline integration and infrastructure automation.

Security and Compliance:

Ensure cloud infrastructure meets security best practices and compliance requirements. Conduct regular security assessments and implement mitigation measures.

Team Leadership:

Build and lead a high-performing team of cloud and automation professionals. Provide mentorship and foster a collaborative team culture.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

Act as a key contact for cloud initiatives, collaborating with stakeholders across the organization. Communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.

Financial Management:

Develop and manage the budget for cloud operations. Monitor and report on cloud spending, identifying cost-saving opportunities.

Innovation:

Stay current with industry trends and advancements in cloud computing and automation. Lead initiatives to implement innovative solutions.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Seven (7) years of relevant IT experience, with five (5) years of experience in a leadership role focused on cloud operations and automation is required.

Proven experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).

Strong knowledge of automation tools and practices (CI/CD, IaC, containerization).

Excellent understanding of cloud security principles and compliance standards.

Strong problem-solving skills and strategic thinking abilities.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

Ten (10) plus years of relevant IT experience, with five (5) plus years of experience in a leadership role focused on cloud operations and automation is preferred.

Advanced certifications in cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect).

Experience with hybrid cloud environments and multi-cloud strategies.

Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash).

Familiarity with machine learning and AI technologies as they relate to cloud computing.

Experience with microservices architecture and serverless computing.

Knowledge of networking concepts and technologies, including VPNs, firewalls, and load balancers.

Strong project management skills, including experience with Agile and Scrum methodologies.

Demonstrated ability to drive cultural change and foster innovation within teams.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) seven (7) years of full-time or, equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in IT administration or IT management, of which (B) at least three (3) years must have been in a managerial capacity.
