PARAPROFESSIONAL Grades 6-12

Qualifications: 1) Two Years' Post-Secondary Education required. 2) Massachusetts License and Experience preferred. 3) Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Principal, General Education Teacher(s)/Special Education Teacher(s)

Job Goal: To aid in the provision of a well organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment in which all students, both general education and special education, can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Performance Responsibilities: 1) Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct. a) Understand professional conduct and ethics, including confidentiality. b) Use time constructively during the work day. c) Adhere to policies and procedures per staff and student handbooks and district policies.

2) Demonstrate a strong ability to communicate and collaborate with staff and students. a) Utilize suggestions made by classroom teachers, supervisor, or related service personnel.

3) Demonstrate evidence of professional growth and development.

4) Dress appropriately.

5) Demonstrate strong work ethic and attendance.

6) Understand how students learn and develop and how to assist in providing opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.

7) Provide direct instruction to students in various group settings. a) Reinforce subjects/behaviors that have been taught by the teacher. b) Use appropriate language, positive support and materials with students. c) Take initiative to develop workable solutions to problems while keeping teachers informed. d) Provide appropriate feedback to students. e) Accept individual differences in students and recognize and respect diversity of learning styles. f) Display concern for students' health and safety.

8. Provide behavior intervention to students in various group settings. a) Assist teacher in maintaining the classroom/group environment. b) Maintain a positive attitude, behavior and language toward students at all times. c) Demonstrate knowledge of strategies that reinforce positive student behavior.

9) Monitor and record student progress on daily and periodic bases, using an assigned data-based recording system. a) Observe and document student performance. b) Monitor student progress on goals and objectives according to supervisor/teacher direction or IEP. c) Administer appropriate accommodations and modifications. d) Alert teachers to any problem or special information about individual students.

10) Assists teachers with all other classroom activities and procedures as directed.

11) Assists in the supervision of students.

12) Assists teacher with non-instructional classroom duties such as: a) Feeding/snack routines b) Toileting routines c) Clothing routines d) Other health/medical related duties

13) Assists teachers with transporting students to and from vans.

Terms of Employment:Per Negotiated Contract

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually, in accordance with accepted district guidelines/procedures.
