Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program (ICSP) at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) provides access to simulation-based education for learners across the Health Sciences Campus and ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, EastCare, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. A 24-room 10,000 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to the hospital on the first floor of the Brody Health Sciences Building. A new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center is under construction as part of the new Medical Education Building (opening Fall 2027). The ICSP also has a mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, a 44-foot specialized vehicle that provides simulation education throughout the region, and an MV-22 Osprey Military Transport Simulator.
Job DutiesThis is an "Internal Posting" for an Assistant Dean of Clinical Simulation, open only to applicants currently employed by East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, and will be a part-time (.30 FTE/30%) reassignment of time for a Brody School of Medicine faculty member.
The Assistant Dean is primarily responsible for instructing medical students, residents, and faculty members who participate in simulation activities in the Office of Clinical Simulation at the Brody School of Medicine. This position will develop simulation faculty by orienting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty participating in simulation activities. This position will lead and facilitate inter-professional education activities related to simulation. This position will report to the Associate Dean of Clinical Simulation. This position will require in-person administration and instruction to support the BSOM Simulation Program.
Additional duties will include:Teaching/Instruction (40%)* Create, lead, and participate in simulation educational activities for medical students, graduate medical education, and interprofessional teams. * Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines to develop course content. Participate in the development and validation of clinical scenarios. * Participate in regional education programs using the Healthcare Simulation Unit. * Provide individual oversight to students for practice and/or remediation on technical skills as requested by faculty and students * Work closely with the Administrative Director, Medical Director, and Associate Dean to provide oversight of the Program. * Course Director for the Central Venous Catheterization Course for residents, fellows, and advanced practice practitioners and Moderate Sedation Airway Management for residents and medical staff. Works with ECU Health to ensure quality initiatives related to these programs are met. * Course Director for M2 Doctoring physical diagnosis rotation (PDR) * Instructor for M2 Clinical Applications course for second-year medical students. * Faculty for Emergency Medicine Simulation Fellowship * Faculty for M3 and M4 medical student simulation electives, emergency medicine, critical care, and internal medicine electives
Faculty Development (40%)
* Promote simulation-based education resources to faculty. * Identify and recruit interdisciplinary simulation faculty. Orient faculty instructors to simulation methodology, oversee the faculty development curriculum and annually assess simulation educators. * Assist with faculty development and training related to the use of simulation. Provide training for faculty in the concepts/skills of simulation education and debriefing. * Recruit ECU faculty to serve as simulation content experts. * Provide individualized faculty support involved in the ICSP, including writing scenarios, learning how to use equipment, and learning simulation best practices. * Engage faculty for simulation-specific orientation as set forth by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare accreditation standards. * Provide individualized faculty support to those who need hands-on skills instruction and practice in the ICSP. * Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging simulation education technologies, including basic theory, design, and implementation.Leadership (20%)
* Adheres to the ECU and Society of Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) code of ethics and demonstrates high integrity and professionalism. Acts as a role model for medical students, residents, fellows, and staff. * Demonstrates ability to work in a dynamic environment and adaptability to change. * Participate in regional, national, and international simulation societies to gain and share new insight and knowledge related to the simulation field. * Promotes simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Actively participate in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, including attendance and presentations at the annual International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare and participation on committees and interest groups. * Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations. * Maintain professional skills and refine expertise through appropriate educational/developmental activities and professional affiliations, staying current with national and international advances in simulation and clinical skills activities.

Minimum Education/Experience-Current Brody School of Medicine Faculty member.-MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.-Board Certification* Three years' experience related to this position.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation- Physicians must be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in North Carolina, be granted medical staff privileges at ECU Health Medical Center, be approved to practice medicine through ECU Health Physicians and receive medical liability insurance coverage through ECU Physicians and ECU Health carrier.- Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina- Full schedule DEA Registration CertificateCredentialing with ECU Health Physicians
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education* Clinical background in emergency medicine, critical care, emergency medicine/internal medicine * Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) status * Three or more years of simulation experience at the undergraduate medical education level, including standardized patients, high-fidelity manikins, and partial task trainers. * Completion of a Simulation Fellowship- Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, interprofessional, and organizational skills.- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, analyze complex information, improve complex processes, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines-proven capacity to work well with faculty, staff, and students.
