Job Description:

Summary

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine (VMPM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Iowa State University, located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, Research Administrator II position.

This position will provide project support for a recently awarded USDA Sustainable Agricultural Systems grant related to the sustainability of dairy goat production in the United States. Responsibilities of this position include

overall management of the proposed activities, coordinating team meetings and regular reporting functions. The successful candidate will also oversee the general communication strategy within the team and with project stakeholders. Additional responsibilities include ensuring compliance with university and federal regulations and managing the project budget. The successful candidate will also assist with educational outreach events and event planning and coordinate these efforts with fellow team members. Example of Duties

• Contributes to facility, center, institute, or function related policies, procedures, and programs and may recommend changes.

• Provides consultation to faculty, students, and staff regarding functional expertise, e.g. export controls, animal or human subjects research, sponsored programs administration, research contract negotiations, etc.

• Responsible for operating research-related activities and plans, develops, modifies, and implements research-related programs in compliance with university, local, state, federal, and funding agency regulations.

• Assists with sponsored funding development through evaluation and communication of funding opportunities. Assists investigators with preparing, routing, and submitting funding proposals.

• Assists with post-award project and financial administration through preparation of financial reports, monitoring budgets, and reconciling accounts. Ensures salaries are allocated to sponsored funding accounts. May support multiple research projects.

• Provides consultation in areas of research compliance, e.g. investigates and drafts reports of noncompliance, creates, develops, implements and maintains web-based compliance services and training, monitors compliance with contract/grant terms in accordance with university policies and state and federal regulations, etc.

• May perform other administrative tasks in support of research, e.g. organize and facilitate meetings/events, respond to inquiries, recruit research participants, monitor research protocols, data collection/analysis/management, maintain website/social media content, etc.

Department Description:

The VMPM department has a three-tiered mission of teaching, research and service, and is addressed by a highly-productive faculty, energetic graduate students, and the additional expertise of adjunct faculty. Our research is applied to improvement of animal health, public health and food safety. Our faculty have instructional responsibilities for bacteriology, immunology, virology, microbiology, epidemiology and public health. VMPM’s mission is to create an environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research and service through innovation and discovery. The department imparts knowledge and skills in infectious diseases, encourages lifelong learning, conducts basic and applied research focused on animal and human health, participates in professional and community service, and partners with stakeholders to address societal needs.
