Genentech seeks a highly motivated Senior AI Scientist to join the BRAID (Biology Research | AI Development) department, DELTA team, in Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). Our lab is dedicated to advancing deep learning research to accelerate drug discovery and target discovery efforts, with a focus on large-scale foundation models across modalities. By focusing on foundational deep learning research, we are committed to driving innovation with real-world impact in the drug discovery field.The OppotunityThe successful candidate will drive the research and development of novel deep learning methods to accelerate drug discovery and target discovery efforts. They will lead a research agenda focused on multimodal representation learning, generative modeling, and large language modeling. The successful candidate will work in an exciting and multidisciplinary environment alongside AI scientists, ML engineers, and computational biologists/chemists. The candidate is expected to routinely publish work in top-tier machine learning and scientific venues. Prior experience in biology/chemistry is not required, but interest in drug discovery and scientific applications is valued.You will lead the research, design, and execution of novel, cutting-edge deep learning methods focused on multimodal foundation models, large language modeling, knowledge extraction, and generative modeling.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate novel ML methods into impactful applications for drug discovery and target discovery.
You will scale ML models to large scientific datasets, working at the intersection of deep learning and engineering challenges to support new scientific questions.
You will regularly publish in top-tier ML venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, etc) and scientific journals, presenting results at internal and external scientific venues, conferences, and workshops.
Who you areYou have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
Technical skills:Excellent knowledge of the theory and practice of deep learning, as demonstrated in past projects and/or publications.
Excellent Python and PyTorch programming skills, with extensive knowledge of the best practices of software engineering, data engineering, and MLOps (e.g., familiar with code version control, high-performance compute infrastructures, and machine learning experiment monitoring workflows).
Passionate about developing scalable, efficient, and well-documented software.
Strong background in statistics, probabilistic modeling, and data analysis.
You have strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You have a strong publication record at top-tier ML venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, KDD, ACL, EMNLP, etc.
Preferred:Proven experience in at least one of the following areas: multimodal representation learning, generative modeling, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, information retrieval.
You are passionate about tackling complex technical and scientific challenges and dedicated to staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in deep learning.

Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
