The Managing Editor of AKC Family Dog magazine identifies compelling characters in the dog world who are not just fascinating stories but who also reflect the values and ideals of the AKC. This position will establish a network of talented, reliable reporters and writers whose professional ethics and standards maintain the integrity of the magazine and will pass stringent company requirements. The Managing Editor works in conjunction with designers and administrators in the Publications Department to ensure all publishing deadlines are met. This role also helps select appropriate images to appear in each issue of Family Dog.
This is a Part Time position, approximately 25 hours per week. This position requires several days onsite in our New York City office. Primary Job Duties
Establish a network of talented, reliable reporters and writers. Send assignment letters outlining: story idea, sources used, deadlines, length, fee, and kill fees. Work with regular columnists to find ideas for their columns. Work with various AKC departments and entities-government relations, junior showmanship, CHF, etc.-to identify stories. Find first-person contributors for the Dog's Life column, basing choice on the uniqueness of individual stories and writing style. Create themes for each issue and ensure that the columns, features, and images reflect the theme. Establish a lineup for each bi-monthly issue. Provide input for the creation of the page map. Report and write features and columns whenever necessary. Gather AKC news stories, items, and photos for the Paw Prints section of the publication. Approve all cover photos and work with a designer. Meet monthly and weekly deadlines as assigned. Required Skills, Specialized Knowledge and Competency Requirements
Firsthand knowledge and experience with purebred dogs, AKC, and a range of dog sports is preferred. Proven editorial experience and ability to meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills as well as strong attention to detail and organizational skills required. Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Office Suite. Basic-level skills in Adobe Creative Suite.
The salary range for this position in New York City is $60.00-$63.00 per hour, with a maximum of 25 hours per week; however, the salary offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and location.
