Manages technical accounting activities and supports the consistent application of generally accepting accounting principles (GAAP) for Tampa Electric Company and other TECO Energy operating companies. Additionally, this position will be responsible for managing the SOX compliance activities of the company.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct technical accounting research and prepare accounting memorandums concluding on the proper application of US GAAP for material contracts and transactions.
Assist in the implementation of new accounting and reporting standards, including appropriate involvement of operating companies. Assist in coordinating implementation of Emera (Parent Company) accounting policies and procedures.
Responsible for the oversight of SOX compliance processes and control design. This position does not focus on the testing of controls. However, the position is responsible for the coordination of an annual risk assessment exercise, review of key processes, identification of control gaps and evaluation of control deficiencies as applicable.
Support the preparation of TECO Energy monthly, quarterly, and annual management financial reports, forecasts and budgets for management.
Manage the performance of the external financial audit and play a key role in the day-to-day interaction with the external audit team.
Provide oversight and task direction over two staff members who will report directly to this position.
Manage the preparation and issuance of the FERC Form I and the 3Q form regulatory filings.
As needed assist in quarter-end financial statement preparation process, including preparation of certain footnotes for inclusion in Tampa Electric Forms 10-K and 10-Q and TECO Energy Annual Financial Statements, preparation of related information requests for Emera financial reporting requirements, and review of the Forms 10-K, 10-Q and TECO Energy Annual Financial Statements for compliance with GAAP and SEC regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a regionally accredited college/university
Preferred: Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration from a regionally accredited college/university
Licenses/Certifications
Required: Certified Public Accountant
Related Experience
Required: Minimum of 5 years public accounting or minimum of 7 years of related accounting financial experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required:
Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP requirements is required in areas such as lease accounting, business combinations, derivatives and revenue recognition.
Strong understanding of SOX compliance framework and experience with controls evaluations and design.
Experienced with the preparation and presentation of technical accounting memorandums.
Demonstrated ability to proficiently assimilate, comprehend, and become skilled in complex concepts
Preferred:
Knowledge of utilities regulatory accounting (ASC 980).
