The AWS Sustainability Science team is hiring an Applied Scientist. This role will support developing scalable methods and models to assess and allocate the environmental impacts of AWS data centers and cloud computing services from manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life. This work will drive a deeper understanding of AWS’s environmental impacts, and enable strategic communication of our carbon emissions.

The ideal candidate will have industry experience in modeling data center sustainability impacts. You will help the team to define strategy and implement tooling to identify, ingest, harmonize, store, and develop models to utilize strategic data from both internal and external sources. The candidate should be comfortable working with imperfect data, identifying sources of uncertainty, and finding public data to fill the gaps where needed. The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills and the ability to apply systems thinking to complex, fast moving problems. The candidate will coordinate with research scientists, sustainability specialists, and software engineers in deploying the developed methods and models into production.

Key job responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for:Analyze complex datasets used to make decisions regarding data center infrastructure and cloud services.Drive the design, development, and execution of scientific research projects and data models.Implement sustainability impact assessment models and algorithms to improve the sustainability performance of existing systems, processes, and products.Perform data analysis and provide visualizations.Use modeling, simulation, and optimization to design processes, algorithms, and prediction/classification systems.Investigate the applicability of new approaches to business problems and products by combining theory and experimentation.Quantify business impact and influence go/no-go decisions on corporate initiatives.Solve analysis problems that improve Amazon’s products and advance our scientific knowledge.Work closely with software engineering teams to drive real-time model implementations and new features.

Minimum Requirements

- 1+ years of building models for business applications- PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or other related field experience- Experience programming in Python, Java, C++, or related language- Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals- Experience in any of the following areas: modeling and optimization of data centers and workloads, physics-based modeling and simulation of building systems, sustainable computing

- 1+ years of experience in professional software development- Experience in any of the following areas: modeling and optimization of data centers and workloads, physics-based modeling and simulation of building systems, sustainable computing- Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
