About the Department of Energy & Sustainability

Energy & Sustainability is comprised of four interactive teams: Utilities Distribution & Energy Management; Utilities Production; Campus Sustainability Office; and Energy Transition. They work together to achieve our obligations and seize opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint while providing vital utilities services to the Ithaca Campus.

Campus Sustainability office central coordinating unit responsible for connecting and supporting sustainability and climate change leadership goals, collaborations, and support coordination for the campus sustainability governance bodies.

Utilities Production and Distribution | Facilities and Campus Services (cornell.edu) Team that builds, maintains and operates all the plants that provide 24x7 heat, electricity, chilled water, and potable water to 150 major buildings served by the District Energy System.

Energy Management Overview | Facilities and Campus Services (cornell.edu) Team that minimizes the energy use of the campus.

Climate Action Plan | Sustainable Campus (cornell.edu) Team that is creating a fossil fuel free district energy system.

The Opportunity

Cornell University is seeking an organized and motivated administrative professional to take on the role of Energy & Sustainability Administrator. This role will support the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Energy & Sustainability (E&S), the Campus Sustainability Office (CSO), and the Energy Transition Team. This pivotal role balances administrative support, sustainable event coordination, and program coordination to assist in moving Cornell's commitment to sustainability forward.

Key Responsibilities:

Support for AVP, Executive Director, and CSO DirectorYou will provide comprehensive administrative support, coordinating the calendars and schedules for the AVP, Executive Director for Energy Transition, and CSO Director. You will be handling correspondence and facilitating meetings on behalf of the AVP and CSO Director. You'll be the point person with regards to communication with E&S staff and stakeholders, maintaining confidentiality and acting as a key point of contact. This role requires proactive time management to streamline the AVP's activities and ensure operational efficiency. It also includes composing correspondence that requires initiative, judgement, originality, and knowledge.Sustainable Event Program CoordinationYou will coordinate the campus-wide Sustainable Events Program, partnering, planning, and advising with other event coordinators for major events like Commencement and Slope Day. In this role, you'll advocate for sustainability in event planning and guide implementation of low-impact practices, aligning with Cornell's mission for environmental and social responsibility. This includes the creation of content for various platforms, including web, social media, and print materials for information distribution and marketing.Organizational Program & AdministrationCoordinate programs and initiatives to support the Campus Sustainability Office and the Sustainable Cornell Council. Oversee department events, manage budgets, and facilitate project coordination with E&S administrative assistants. Your involvement will help streamline office operations, handle communications, and support data collection and asset management. It also includes the creation of complex spreadsheets to manage, track and report on program outcomes.

What We Need

Associate's degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. At least three years of related work in engagement and behavior change methodologies, outreach, and program management and coordination in sustainability topics.Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing. Enthusiastic about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing. Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.Demonstrated ability to take initiative, manage multiple priorities, be resourceful, and highly productive.Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) effectively with all levels of the campus community and beyond. Good organizational skills, time management skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work. Diligence and follow through is critical.Strong computer skills with various business software packages (Microsoft Office Suite, MS Teams, SharePoint).Must be familiar with standard office and correspondence practices and demonstrate sound organizational and people skills.

Experience and demonstrated ability to create graphics to illustrate the energy transition.Experience with web content management systems.Experience with Cornell procurement and purchasing systems, including Concur, IWantDocs, SoN's.Experience with crafting effective and attractive presentations with software, such as PowerPoint, Canva, or similar.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement after the completion of training and onboarding. The successful candidate will be expected to work fully on-site for the first 90 days to complete training and onboarding. After successful training, employees typically perform this role remotely 1 day per week and on-campus 4 days per week.
