POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Director, Data Scientist position provides expertise in the use of data science, visualization, and analysis for quality measurement science. This position is essential to helping researchers, product teams, policy makers determine how quality measure data can and is resulting in health outcomes, disparities, patient safety, and affordability. This position will serve as part of a cross-functional innovative team working to score, benchmark, and visualize quality measures to expand the development and use of next-generation quality measures -- i.e., high priority, low burden measures that improve equity, quality, and affordability -- in Joint Commission programs and other scaled public and private payment and accountability programs. The Senior Director will collaborate across departments on the design and data strategy as well as develop systems for organizing data to analyze, identify, and report trends; analyze the interrelationships of data and define logical aspects of data sets.
The Senior Director will be accountable for the professional growth, development, and career well-being of staff, modeling exceptional leadership behavior and enterprise values. The Senior Director will also provide thought leadership and content expertise to staff on the use and visualization of data in quality measure-based products.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Define, architect, and manage data pipelines, identify appropriate data models and visualizations for specific aims
Prepare and present tradeoff analysis of varied data approaches; ability to facilitate the selection of best-fitting methods based on specific research questions and necessary data interrogations.
Supervise and guide the preparation of data sets for analysis; supervise/mentor staff to perform data evaluation and resolve data issues.
Recommend approaches for efficiently dealing with complex data sets. Analyzes the relationships between data sets and defines logical aspects of data sets. Experience allows deliverables to be produced with greater efficiency and accuracy than would be expected by mid and junior-level data scientists. Accurately estimates the time needed to address data needs and delivers results by deadlines.
Takes creative and innovative approaches to use data visualization programs, tools, and techniques to generate dashboards, reports, and presentations. Material produced significantly enhances storytelling, understanding, and interpretation of trends and patterns of business importance.
Partners with project leaders, team members, and statistical staff to identify and capture data required from internal and external sources.
Develops complex statistical models, at the direction of the statistical staff, for ad hoc review and analysis of data. Runs descriptive statistics and basic statistical tests with little or no assistance.
Creates standard operating procedures, prepares and maintains technical specifications and related documentation to secure procedures, holding team accountable for use.
Manages multiple projects and collaborates with multiple teams simultaneously, prioritizing workload and resolving conflicts effectively.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree in statistics, data science, computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or a similar field.
Experience:
5+ years’ experience working with complex healthcare data analysis and modeling is required.
Minimum of 3 years of experience managing, coaching, and mentoring individuals and/or teams and holding staff accountable for results
Skills/Abilities:
Five to seven years of prior relevant experience in providing statistical support utilizing statistical software. Highly proficient in a variety of programming languages, relational databases, reporting/query tools, and software packages (e.g., SAS, R, MS Excel, MS Access, MS SQL Server, Power BI etc.).
Is a lifelong learner displaying passion and curiosity to keep current on database technology, programming languages, and best practices. Train and mentor others.
Advanced technical or statistical experience in all phases of relational database development and quality assurance (e.g., requirements, analysis, design, testing, implementation, documentation, maintenance). Experience with implementation and interpretation of statistical modeling techniques (i.e., linear/non-linear regression models), in addition to providing statistical analyses requested.
Ability to understand data analysis requirements, explore alternatives and communicate recommendations. Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems, investigate and debug and effectively report issues.
Effective written and oral communication skills, especially in communicating business and technical information. Highly proficient with data visualization programs used by The Joint Commission. Ability to provide data tables and graphics that significantly enhance the interpretation of analysis results. Capable of preparing and delivering requirements and test plan documents.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to professionally interact with external stakeholders and project partners, especially in communicating technical or statistical information and specifications. Ability to present to large groups.
Highly independent, requiring minimal supervision. Demonstrates a results-orientation, determination, ownership of responsibility, reliability, and accountability, and yet functions as a team member and follows direction as part of a team under general supervision.
Proven track record leading and managing multiple complex projects and competing priorities to achieve optimal results. Demonstrated ability guiding staff on project organization, execution, continuous improvement and completion of deliverables.
