StaffPosition SummaryThe Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist (CVOR ST) isresponsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgicalprocedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use,cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR STmust be able to work under high pressure in a fast-paced environment. You willapply good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and apositive work environment. The position requires the ability to be conscientious,organized, and orderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of thesurgeon and patient.

Responsibilities1. Prepares for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments andsupplies. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies; ensures goodworking order of instruments. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and

makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks scheduleand plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Scrubs and provides instruments, sutures, andother sterile supplies during surgical procedure. Passes instruments and retractstissue.3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautionsthroughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments, andsponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. Disposes ofsharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.5. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishingsupplies and cleaning operating rooms.6. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff andstudents, as assigned.7. Follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, appropriate handlingof specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation andlaser safety, infection control, assembling and disassembling instruments.8. Is proficient to scrub on at least two surgical specialties.

Minimum education: Surgical technologist certification programPreferred Education:

Minimum experience: 3-4 years of experience in a surgical technologist rolePreferred experience: 1 year in CVOR setting

Required licenses/certifications: Surgical technologist certification and Basic lifesupport certificationHours per week: 40 hoursOn call requirement: STAR program

STAR Program Defined:An employee in the STAR program is guaranteed 80 hours of regular pay. This is for 40 hours of workhours at the facility and for 80 hours of on-call shifts. Program participation consists of five 8-hr workshifts and five 16-hour on-call shifts per pay period. For example, each Monday through Friday in a pay period would either consist of on-site work 8-hour shift or a 16 hour on-call shift.
