GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE: Under the direction of a physician and in accordance with established methods, procedures and standards of practice, monitors and controls extracorporeal perfusion apparatus during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and related procedures on patients. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: + Certified as a Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) required. + Two years of college and attendance at a school of perfusion or equivalent training required. + Completion of two years of post baccalaureate education or a bachelor's degree in Perfusion Technology preferred. + Minimum of two years of experience as a Perfusionist required. + Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers certification from either AHA, ARC or the Military Training Network is required at hire in all units, unless currently certified in ACLS and/or PALS as defined in the SAHS Certification Crosswalk. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: + Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organizational Mission, Core Values, and Vision in behaviors, practices, policies and decisions. + Maintains all phases of life support during surgical procedures where the heart and lungs are not functioning, i.e. open heart surgery, through the use of a heart-lung machine. + Controls anticoagulation as required for cardiopulmonary bypass and termination. + Administers blood, drugs and anesthetic agents upon prescription. Maintains a Perfusion Record on each patient. + Assists in evaluation of new equipment, disposable items, and/or perfusion techniques. + Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of replaceable items.
