JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: School Nurse
Qualifications:
New Jersey School Nurse Certificate Effective communication skills. Valid Providers Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent from the American Red Cross Required criminal history background check and proof of S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
Reports to:
Supervisor of Nursing Services
Performance Responsibilities:
Maintains an efficient, functional health services office. Conducts medical examinations of students as required by law and/or board policy; and refers all cases of suspected disease, illness or injury to the medical inspector for his/her opinion and direction. Schedules and assists the medical and dental inspectors in conducting the annual and special examinations of students. Creates, maintains, and updates cumulative student health records, as required by law and/or board policy, ensuring that all pertinent health data are entered. Examines students returning to school after absences due to illness or injury and recommends to the school principal the exclusion of students who show evidence of communicable diseases or who have not submitted acceptable evidence of immunizations pursuant to law and/or board policies. Conducts annual examinations for visual acuity and records the results in students' health records. Conducts audiometric examinations of all students annually as mandated by law. Administers tuberculosis screening for students as mandated by law. Handles all medical emergencies that occur in assigned building. Assists in reporting all accidents that occur in the building or grounds. Monitors and reports all high or unusual incidents of respiratory or other diseases or illnesses in assigned building. Provides appropriate response to DNR orders. Conducts health classes for special areas of information as required. Develops health education materials and assists classroom teachers with health education instruction. Serves as a member of the child study team in his/her assigned school. Assists the medical inspector in conducting the building inspections. Consults with parents or legal guardians regarding medical issues involving their children and follow-ups as necessary. Maintains liaison with other health agencies in the community, which provide services to the district students and staff. Makes detailed monthly reports to the Supervisor of Nursing Services. Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor of Nursing Services and/or building administrator.
Terms of Employment:
10 months; tenurable
Evaluated by the building Principal consistent with statute, code and collective negotiations agreement.
Compensation and benefits as established by the collective negotiations agreement.
