Summary
The Law Department provides legal advice and counsel to all of NYPA's business and functional areas and seeks to fill the position of Attorney II. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel for the Contracts, Licensing and Environmental group, the ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience practicing law having fully developed legal research, drafting and communication skills to support senior counsel on a variety of matters, primarily transactional and regulatory compliance. Flexibility to engage on a variety of manners with an eagerness to learn and grow as an Attorney supporting the utility industry will be favorably considered.
In this Attorney II role you will have opportunities to and be expected to coordinate with internal stakeholders. You will also collaborate among the your colleagues in the Law Department to promote consistency in contract terms and to improve NYPA's transactional processes and champion the use of technology to achieve efficiencies in a collaborative environment. You will also provide legal support to ensure our compliance with applicable rules and regulations governing NYPA, including but not limited to technical-regulatory requirements, standards and laws related to electric utility operations. You will have opportunities to develop expertise on NERC Reliability Standards and provide legal assistance with regulatory reporting, compliance assessments, internal investigations, and audit preparations. Adaptability and a growth mindset are key qualities.

Work under the direction of an Assistant General Counsel, or an assigned senior level attorney, to develop a deeper understanding of NYPA's and its subsidiaries' Business Units and their respective operationsDevelop a deeper understanding of NYPA's and its subsidiaries' enabling legislation and related statutes contained in the Public Authorities Law along with other laws, rules, regulations and Executive Ordersimpacting NYPA's and its subsidiaries' business activities as well as internal governance and compliance programsAttend meetings with senior level attorneys and assist in the presentation of legal analyses to business unit clientsResearch legal issues and draft opinions or memoranda analyzing potential impacts on NYPA's and its subsidiaries' programs and related business activitiesDevelop relationships with business unit clients and gain a deeper understanding of their programmatic legal needsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to thoroughly and independently conduct legal research on progressively complex issuesAbility to analyze issues more critically and identify obstacles or problems for NYPA operationsAbility to work more independently on various issues/multi-taskingAbility to achieve positive working relationships with business unit clientsDevelop working-level oral and written communication skillsDevelop legal expertise in an area germane to NYPA's business operationsEducation, Experience and Certifications
Juris Doctor Degree, admission to the New York State Bar and admitted to practice in New York State and Federal courts is requiredMinimum 2 years of legal experienceExperience in one or more of the following areas: of law relevant to NYPA, such as energy, regulatory, litigation, commercial and finance, and employmentExperience in utility industry preferredPhysical Requirements
Up to 25% travel primarily within NY StateThe New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $110,620-$138,270.
