Position Description
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking a highly motivated full-time Faculty Clinical Pathologist to serve as the Director of Transfusion Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital and Trauma Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center. Applicants must hold an M.D., D.O, or an M.D./Ph.D. degree with eligibility for California medical licensure and be board certified/eligible in Clinical Pathology (CP), Anatomic & Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) or Transfusion Medicine.
This position is at the Assistant, Associate, Full Professor level in the HS Clinical, Clinical X, In-Residence, or Ladder Rank series.
Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching (at both resident/fellow and medical student levels) is preferred. The HS Clinical and Clinical X series emphasize strong commitment to excellence in clinical service and teaching. Clinical/translational research or other scholarly/creative activities are expected for applicants in the Clinical X series.
There is greater emphasis on research in the In-Residence and Ladder Rank series. Opportunities for collaborative projects abound.
Candidates must meet all required qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidate's application materials must state basic qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.
The successful candidate will serve as the Medical Director, CLIA Clinical Consultant and Technical Supervisor for the Transfusion Medicine Service and Blood Bank within the UCSF Clinical Laboratory at ZSFG.
Responsibilities will include providing overall direction of the hospital-based blood bank including clinical consultation for blood banking and transfusion medicine, assuring appropriate utilization of blood bank products and services, assuring accurate and timely performance of blood bank testing to support the safe issuance of blood components, and providing guidance for clinical services on safe transfusion practices in a manner that meets accreditation standards and complies with applicable laws and regulations.
The UCSF Clinical Laboratory at ZSFG provides laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients of ZSFG, Laguna Honda Hospital, District Health Centers, and other facilities under the auspices of the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
The Director of Transfusion Medicine will also serve on the ZSFG Transfusion Committee, direct the ZSFG Tissue Bank, and advise and support clinical research activities related to transfusion at ZSFG.
By arrangement, UCSF Transfusion Medicine Faculty provide rotating backup cross-coverage of blood bank and transfusion services at this and other UCSF Campus hospital locations.
