Job Summary/Description:
The Director of Technology oversees the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department and is responsible for the maintenance of all broadcast technology and equipment at the station. Candidate must have a strong understanding of live news broadcast processes and procedures and significant experience working in a news-producing live television environment. Candidate must have strong IT, and network administration skills and be able to implement best practices to the technical operations. The Director of Technology is responsible for the support of all broadcast technical facilities, equipment, and software applications for local and remote operations including but not limited to workstations, servers, phones, networks, databases, automation systems, and video and editing equipment used.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Manage and schedule technical and operational staff
• Manage the daily operation of the station, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
• Monitor multiple air channels and transmitters, maintaining regulatory compliance, and assuring quality control of on-air product
• Oversee IT systems and infrastructure
• Maintain transmitters, satellite antenna systems, automation, signal distribution, and routing systems.
• Exhibit working knowledge of television maintenance, FCC requirements and licensing, and OSHA guidelines
• Prepare and manage the engineering department's budget, including capital expenditures, operating expenses, and resource allocation
• Oversee all building maintenance and upkeep items working in consultation with the Assistant Chief Engineer and IT Director
• Responsible for maintaining equipment for all aspects of on-air product - TV air chain, video editing systems, IT networks, graphic systems, field news gathering equipment, and weather systems
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, broadcast engineering, information technology, or related fields
• Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in broadcast engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or management role
• Extensive experience with RF technology, video/audio production systems, automation systems, and IT networking
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining broadcast transmitters, studio equipment, and automation systems
• Strong knowledge of FCC regulations and compliance requirements
• Experience with IP-based video/audio transport and streaming technologies
• Familiarity with computer networking, server management, and IT security
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure
• Excellent communication and leadership skills
• Must be available to support 24/7 operations
