TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE METALLURGIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The mission of the Technology (Product & Process) Associate Metallurgist Development Program is to develop highly skilled future leaders and metallurgical expertise through real life projects and challenges in a variety of technical areas. Participants will gain a broad orientation to product and process metallurgy that will give individuals and managers the background to properly guide their career path. New metallurgists should have an appreciation for key functions of each group to aid in decision making for their first permanent role. Upon completion of the program (up to but no more than three (3) years), participants will have a wide array of career path options within a variety of departments and office locations within CTC.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE METALLURGIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Training may include but is not limited to physical metallurgy of Carpenter alloys, use of Carpenter information systems, statistics and problem solving, process management, project management, and business process improvement.
  • Candidate will spend time in various metallurgy groups and gain experience in multiple product forms such as forge bar and billet, bar, coil, or strip and processing areas such as melting, hot working or finishing.
  • Will have an assigned manager but will be mentored by each group.
  • Position will have project and day to day work and tasks.
  • During the first year, focus is on learning tools, alloys, projects, and systems.
  • Projects are focused on real business needs.
  • Opportunities to meet and work with other departments and functional areas including manufacturing, quality, commercial, and research and development groups.
  • Focus on professional development.
  • At the end of 2 years or before, candidate will be permanently assigned to a product or process metallurgy role based on combination of needs, skills, and preferences.
REQUIRED FOR THE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE METALLURGIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Sciences (or applicable major) and 0-1 years of experience in Metallurgy in a professional environment.
  • Experience working in a production environment (internship, co-op, senior project, etc.).
  • Solid academic knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in team-based environment.
  • Ability to support and/or lead team efforts.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to manage their own project/work portfolio including day to day needs and longer-term projects.
  • Ability to access mill manufacturing areas.
  • Motivation to learn and grow.
PREFERRED FOR THE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE METALLURGIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
  • Experience with stainless steels, specialty steels, or superalloys.
  • Experience with SPC or statistical tools for problem solving.
  • Fundamental understanding of lean principles.
  • Hands-on experience in a material/metallographic lab (sample prep, polishing, etching).
  • Hands-on experience with light optical microscopy and interpretation of microstructure).
