Summary You will serve as a Chemist in the Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Department (CIHL) of NAVENPVNTMEDU 2 NORFOLK. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Responsibilities You will participate in quality control programs of the laboratory which includes the analysis of known samples in order to validate existing methodologies. You will search the established methodology manuals and chemical literature to find applicable or closely related method of identifications. You will use wet laboratory procedures and/or more sophisticated analysis using advanced instrumentation. You will know if the standards meet performance qualifications. You will need to be able to prepare standards. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications For GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience in analysis on one of the instruments, for example gas chromatographs, gas chromatograph mass spectrophotometers, high pressure liquid chromatographs, graphite furnaces, ion chromatography, or inductively coupled plasmas. Experience preparing standards and meet know if the standards meet performance qualifications. For GS-9 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience on at least two instruments, for example gas chromatographs, gas chromatograph mass spectrophotometers, high pressure liquid chromatographs, graphite furnaces, ion chromatography, or inductively coupled plasmas. Experience using the previously mentioned instruments, the individual must be able to train others on the instrumentation. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: GS-07: 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement GS-09: Successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree. Successfully completed two full years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to a master's degree.
