Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the diagnostic preparation of histology slides, performing histopathological tests, as well as maintenance tasks, quality control, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Responsible for the preparation of diagnostic slides by fixation and processing of tissue blocks, embedding with proper orientation, microtomy, hematoxylin and eosin staining, as well as special staining techniques such as muscle and nerve biopsy techniques.Attain knowledge of the laboratory computer system to record results.Maintain technical and diagnostic accuracy in all areas of the laboratory.Maintain neat and accurate records of test results.Prepare reagents, standards, and controls as needed.Observe all hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices, maintaining a safe, clean, and prepared work area.Perform and document quality control procedures and preventive maintenance on instruments; notify the supervisor and/or director of significant and critical malfunctions of equipment.Follow all departmental quality control procedures and troubleshoot quality control failures with proper documentation.Perform duties according to schedule to maintain appropriate workflow and timely completion; participate in the overall quality control program of the laboratory and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.Assist with training of residents, medical students, and fellows.Assist with laboratory inventory and other related duties as assigned by the manager.Perform specialized laboratory tests and procedures in areas such as histology, cytology, cytogenetics, medical technology, and histocompatibility.Record, interpret, and analyze results of tests and procedures.Ensure quality control of slides, specimens, and cultures. Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment.Oversee and instruct support staff and serve as a source of information on specialized laboratory techniques and equipment operation.Prepare specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples, and other matter for analysis and diagnosis using specialized laboratory techniques.Stain and mount slides, prepare specialized solutions and media, and culture tissues.Develop and modify laboratory techniques and procedures.Order and maintain inventory of supplies.May photograph specimens and other matter and develop film.Perform additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.
Requirements:
Previous experience in Histology is preferred.Good manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.Certification as HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP).Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school-level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.Demonstrate the ability to distinguish results of various tests and acknowledge the accuracy of the results (e.g., special stains).Ability to examine specimens under a light and fluorescent microscope to determine accurate staining for routine and special stains.Ability to work safely around disagreeable odors, infectious materials, laboratory chemicals, and other radioactive, toxic, and hazardous substances.Ability to use a manual microtome for long periods, requiring repetitive motion/rotation.Ability to use a microscope (light and fluorescent) for prolonged periods.
