We are seeking an experienced technical leader to help us bring innovative new ideas in precision targeting to the warfighter.
As a member of our team, you'll contribute to optical systems design efforts, with a focus on ground-based precision targeting applications. Key technical areas involved include inertial navigation, celestial azimuth determination, terrain aided navigation, passive and laser imaging, precision boresighting, laser rangefinders and designators, and systems integration, including with additional elements of the forward observer’s equipment. We are looking for someone with technical leadership or project management experience in addition to a strong technical body of knowledge in one or more of these areas.
You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary teams to solve complex problems for our sponsors, through to operational fielding of important new capabilities. We are passionate about applying optics and photonics to next generation solutions in defense technology.
As a Precision Targeting Engineer..Your primary responsibility will be to serve as a project manager and technical contributor to precision targeting related projects. Management tasks will include planning and coordinating execution of efforts by a team of ~10 staff, technical and financial reporting, and developing strong sponsor relationships.You will apply your existing technical expertise and grow into new technical expertise in precision targeting as a well rounded systems engineer under the guidance of an experienced precision targeting lead Systems Engineer.You will develop strong relationships with representatives of the forward observer community and a deep understanding of their operational needs and constraints.You will support other projects in the Optics and Photonics group including internal research grants and direct funded efforts.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...Possess a BS degree (or higher) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Mathematics, or a related field.Have 5 or more years of experience working with one or more relevant technologies including: inertial navigation, celestial azimuth determination, terrain aided navigation, operation in GPS contested environments, passive and laser imaging, precision boresighting, laser rangefinders and designators,
batteries, low power electronics, lightweight manufacturing methods, and systems integration.Are skilled in leading small teams with demonstrated experience as a team lead or project manager.Are willing and able to travel to support technical interchange meetings, programmatic reviews, and field tests (~10-15%)Are able to obtain an Interim Secret clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...Have 8 or more years of experience working in precision targeting applications.Have 5 or more years of experience as a team lead or project manager.Are familiar with technology transition lifecycles for department of defense applications.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
