Description:

Position Summary Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. This position requires weekend call coverage averaging one weekend (Friday 6AM-Monday 6AM) every four weeks.

Duties & Responsibilities

Utilize the nursing process by demonstrating appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's care. Assess the patient, collect and document the patient's current health status and medical history. Make accurate and ongoing assessment of patient's status and respond appropriately. Plan/Implement; set priorities for nursing action in a logical sequence according to patient's needs and formulate a plan of care by the appropriate selection of Nurse Practice Standards. Evaluate; perform ongoing assessment and revise plan of care based on new date and patient's condition. Document accurate and ongoing assessment of patient status. Communicate with the medical provider regarding patient needs, the nursing assessments and recommendations on a daily basis. Collaborate with other nurses and health team members to ensure the patient's wellbeing. Cover primary call on average of one weekend every four weeks. Weekend call coverage begins at 6AM on a Friday and ends at 6AM the following Monday (3 days of coverage). Call coverage requires working shifts during the call period in the event of a call-off in which another employee is unable to fill the shift required for minimum staffing levels. Teach patient appropriate health information in a timely manner. Administer medications and IV's according to policy and procedure. Observe and document patient's response to pertinent medications. Demonstrate ability and appropriate technical skills when administering treatments and procedures in accordance with provider's orders and policy and procedure. Demonstrate necessary skills and knowledge to provide care for patients according to policy and procedure. Demonstrate ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise and professional manner. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
