Wastewater Treatment Plan Operator Trainee

The City of Sterling is now accepting applications for a full-time Wastewater Treatment Plan Operator Trainee.
Under the supervision of an employee of higher classification, person will learn skills and tasks necessary to properly operate and maintain the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewage Pump Stations. The training period is for an unspecified period of time depending on individual's ability. The work of this position involves operation, maintenance and repair of all Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sewage Pump Station equipment including, but not limited to pumps, blowers, chlorine equipment, clarifiers, samplers, flow meters, standby generators, tractors, lawn mowers, pickup and dump trucks and plows. Operation and maintenance duties also require the ability to record and interpret data from, but not limited to, flow meters, pump panels, monitors and laboratory tests and occasionally plowing snow. Person must be physically able to enter confined space areas such as, but not limited to, manhole vaults, sewers, tanks and pump station wet-wells.
Requirements for this position include a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must possess or be able to acquire a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsements. Must have the ability to acquire additional training including short courses at a college level and obtain an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Certificate of Competency, if required to do so.
This position is a Grade 6. The salary range for this position is $47,667 - $54,000 annually. Starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Benefits include health benefits and enrollment in IMRF.
