About the Role:
We are looking for a Materials Scientist (Polymer/Composites) to join our Gore Fabrics Applied Research Group. In this role, you will work on early-stage projects in our technology portfolio with applications in high performance apparel, focused on enabling material and product development using empirical, theoretical, and computational approaches. You will be responsible for developing deep scientific knowledge and capabilities related to the mechanical behavior of polymers/composites and applying them to advanced material research and product performance.
This position will be located at our facility in Elkton, Maryland, with the possibility of a hybrid remote work arrangement, depending upon the responsibilities of the role and business needs.
Pay and Benefits:$115,000 - $172 ,000 per yearRoles above $150k are eligible for the variable pay program each fiscal year, based on defined business performance metrics.Factors considered in extending an offer within this pay range include (but not limited to) education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.Medical, Dental and Vision benefits effective on Day 1 of employment! Responsibilities:Perform analyses to solve problems related to polymer/composite mechanical behavior using empirical, theoretical, and computational approachesTranslate problem statements using scientific method to hypotheses and action plansDeploy deep scientific knowledge to develop evaluation capabilities that connect material properties to product and/or end-use performanceEffectively integrate and work collaboratively in project teams to apply this knowledge to the development of unique and valuable materials and technologyPerform research with a trained eye for detail, looking for new and practical ways to develop, innovate and optimize materials and technology (detail-oriented and creativity)Effectively communicate technical work to a cross-functional audience, including making clear proposals and/or recommendations with interpretation and impact of results
Required Qualifications:M.S. Degree in materials science and engineering, polymer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fieldsDemonstrated hands-on experience with mechanical testing, method development, and failure analysisStrong knowledge of material and composite property testing and characterization, with an emphasis on mechanical behavior (material deformation, fracture, and fatigue)Ability to use empirical, theoretical, and computational approaches to analyze and solve complex problems, develop fundamental understanding, and translate findings into guidance for real-word applicationsDemonstrated ability to generate and test hypotheses, develop, and evaluate alternative solutionsDemonstrated ability to convey technology and/or material benefits to both technical and non-technical audiencesExcellent organizational, networking, presentation, and interaction skillsAbility to plan, communicate, and drive research projects that align with stakeholder needs and deliver against them in a timely mannerDemonstrated ability to influence and challenge effectively within global and cross-functional teamsAbility to travel 5 % of the time
Desired Qualifications:PhD in materials science and engineering, polymer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields or MS in materials science and engineering, polymer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields and 5 years of industrial experienceExperience with polymer characterization (example: DSC, TGA, DMA, rheology)Experience working with textile and/or polymer films
This position requires access to export-controlled areas and information. Candidates must be "U.S. persons" as that term is defined in 8 USC §1324b(a)(3).
