BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of school buses, trucks, and other FWCS vehicles to meet or exceed Indiana State Police and Department of Transportation regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program. Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty trucks and/or buses preferred. The incumbent must possess knowledge of the technical aspects, methods, materials, terminology, principles, practices, procedures, and equipment used in the assigned field. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Indiana, or obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of the date of hire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve vehicle problems and malfunctions; perform major and minor repairs; replace parts and components as needed; assure safe and proper operating condition of District vehicles.Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles; service vehicles with fuel, oil, grease, water, and hydraulic fluids; ensure proper fluid levels; lubricate gearboxes; drain and refill crankcases; replace fuses; assure proper air levels of tires and fill as needed; replace and rotate tires.Adjust, repair, and maintain brake systems; adjust and replace brakes; perform transmission, motor, and engine inspections, overhauls, maintenance, and repairs; perform minor and major tune-ups on District vehicles.Maintain and repair vehicle lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, exhaust, hydraulic, steering, and cooling systems as assigned; diagnose and repair electrical systems; test and repair electrical circuits and components.Drive a vehicle to perform road tests; respond to emergency road calls and perform related field work as directed.Prepare buses to meet safety requirements for school buses in the State of Indiana; perform scheduled safety checks and inspections as required.Plan, organize, and lay out assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, sketches, schematics, technical manuals, and specifications; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders.Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as air tools, jacks, testers, meters, lifts, and various hand and power tools; utilize a computer and assigned software.Maintain shop and work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.Perform bodywork as needed; install, maintain, and replace flooring, upholstery, mirrors, and glass.Attend in-services or special schooling to maintain current knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, transmission systems, electrical systems, bodywork, and other areas as required.Serve as a substitute bus driver, as needed.Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
Lead Bus Technician Additional Duties:Serves as the decision maker for the team, as designated by the Supervisor of Bus Garage Operations; computer entry of completed work orders.Master Bus Technician
