DC Domestic Transportation Manager

Responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the inbound and outbound freight network to ensure proper freight flow to the business. Manages the processes and activities of Big Lots’ domestic transportation network by leading a team of transportation specialists to deliver high levels of customer service while optimizing cost to serve.
Manages and coordinates all inbound and outbound scheduling and communication, resourcing, staff scheduling and team development. Works across Dedicated fleets and one-way carriers as well as Big Lots’ network of distribution centers and 1400+ stores to optimize supply chain performance.

Acts as the subject matter expert on transportation management systems and leads team in the execution of transportation operations through the effective use of systems and tools. Oversees the management of the trailer fleet, Distribution Center (DC) yards and Yard Management System. Supports transportation strategies through input and execution in conjunction with Transportation and Supply Chain executive team.1. Develop and lead implementation of transportation processes and plans including robust metrics to deliver continuous improvement in service, cost and people. 2. Collaborates with internal and external partners to ensure transportation strategies and plans are aligned to business objectives. 3. Drive day-to-day performance excellence; customer deliveries, network transfer orders & transportation compliance, systems (Transportation Management System solution), route guides, freight rating & payment discrepancies and carrier EDI (automated transactions through electronic data interchange). 4. Leads staff by building talent; establishing credibility; planning and organizing; driving change; and delivering performance. 5. Manages all aspects of dedicated carrier performance through the management staff of the carriers. 6. Plans, organizes and completes analysis on dedicated carrier financial and service opportunities. Monitors and controls expenses to meet or beat financial plans and targets. 7. Oversees ongoing carrier relationships. Collaborates with Transportation carrier management team in selection, negotiations and management of carriers to deliver high service levels and maintain cost effective freight rates. 8. Coordinates communications for the transportation department between vendors, carriers, and various internal contacts to guarantee coordination of effort. 9. Guides the development of all optimization parameters and models to assess and evaluate transportation costs. 10. Manages all scheduling and related communications to DCs, stores and carriers. 11. Ensures most cost-effective DC to stores alignment; makes periodic adjustments and coordinates related communications. 12. Coordinates research to verify and resolve delivery complaints. 13. Manages green/carbon foot print shipper requirements and reporting to ensure adherence and yearly renewal of certificate. 14. Prepares and analyzes various reports to ensure proper operation of the delivery system. 15. Develops and distributes standard operational procedures that must be followed on all shipments. 16. Establishes and carries out transportation shrink control disciplines and programs.
