Safety ManagerJob Description: The HITT Safety Manager is responsible for the safety performance and safety development of their assigned business units and direct reports.
This individual is a safety resource at the project, business unit and corporate levels.
This individual regularly assesses the safety needs of their assigned business units or projects and utilizes their assigned resources to meet those needs.
This individual also participates in developing HITT’s corporate safety program and safety culture.
ResponsibilitiesManage direct report work loads based on project volume, project need and additional department responsibilities and make staffing recommendations accordinglyConduct regular check ins and yearly performance evaluations for all direct reportsAssess training and learning needs for direct reportsTrain and support Safety Department members as neededReview career path goals with team members, providing feedback on career developmentParticipate in the retention and recruiting of HITT Safety Department team membersManage outside consultant project needs and performanceAble to determine and fulfill the safety needs of multiple projects and/or business units.Able to evaluate the inspection performance of other department members and project team members.Conduct on site safety inspections utilizing Predictive Solutions System independentlyEvaluate hazard and incident data to identify trends and create focus on specific project and corporate safety needs.Set safety inspection criteria and expectations and measure/evaluate performanceMentor Operations/Site Operations in safety inspection processEvaluate project compliance with federal, state, local, corporate and client safety regulations and procedures.Identify and address safety needs and challenges associated with future project work.Evaluate and address safety performance of subcontractors working on HITT projectsReview project safety inspections with Site OperationsRegularly analyze and interpret inspection and incident data to identify business unit safety trends and make recommendations to address themDistribute project safety inspections to key Project Team members and subcontractorsDistribute open issue summary and evaluation for projects and business unitsResearch/evaluate OSHA current and future regulations to address project needsLead OSHA or third party safety inspections independentlyLead crisis or accident/incident response and investigation independentlyAble to develop, select and deliver safety toolbox meetings and/or project safety orientations effectivelyAble to evaluate and coach others on toolbox and orientation deliveryEnforce safety requirements with HITT and subcontractor workforce and supervisionEvaluate project safety policies for effectiveness and identify improvement opportunitiesDeliver “Just In Time” on site safety trainingReview and develop common and complex task Job Hazard Analysis independentlyAssist with safety planning as part of preconstruction processLead select subcontractor safety preconstruction meetingsIdentify and address special needs for Site Specific Safety PlansParticipates in project safety and subcontractor meetings as neededDevelopment project safety orientations that address special client or condition requirementsElevates safety concerns appropriately as neededAudits usage of project safety signage and provides recommendationsProvides audit and review of project documentation requirements and can enact improvements as needed.Problem Solve: Able to research to obtain information to resolve safety related issues independentlyIdentifies or selects special safety/protective equipment for projects independentlyCollaborates with project team to execute project wide safety stand downsAble to identify and arrange for specific safety training to meet project or business unit needsIs a technical resource to all members of the safety department and site operationsEvaluate inspection process performance and identify improvement opportunitiesDevelop and/or lead in execution of department corporate level goalsDevelop business unit safety goalsCan conduct and develop in-house safety trainingIdentifies corporate safety/protective equipment needsResearch and trial of new safety related productsResponsible for monthly safety summary of assigned business unitsActs as prime point of contact for processes, such as Predictive Solutions or Toolbox Talks, within the safety departmentParticipate in HITT Corporate initiatives and/or committees outside of safetyCreate and maintain positive working relationships with HITT Project Teams and subcontractorsRespond to safety concerns from client, tenants or impacted members of the publicAssist/collaborate with other portions of the corporate Risk Management Team as neededParticipate in safety and/or construction professional organization meetings
QualificationsBachelors degree in safety or related field preferredCHST, CSP or equivalent professional safety designationFirst Aid/CPR certificationOSHA 30 Hour for construction. OSHA 500 preferredDegree and five years of experience or eight or more years of construction safety experience. Other professional experience/skills may act as a substitute.Shows comprehensive understanding of high hazard technical areas (cranes, fall protection, scaffold, excavation, electrical)Good written and verbal communications skillsAbility to assess and prioritize multiple business unit needs, tasks, projects and demandsAble to handle confidential informationAdapts to flexible and changing schedulesStrong analytical and research skills to define and solve problemsWorks well independentlyWillingness to respond to emergency or crisis conditionsAble to work under various environmental or site conditionsAble to navigate stairs, ladders and uneven floors or ground conditionsSets an example for safe work practices on and off of work sitesHITT Contracting, Inc. is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
