Job Summary

Constructs, assembles, checks, repairs and maintains the sprinkler piping system in order to provide adequate and satisfactory irrigation schedules and facilities to accomplish the watering for the University campus. ResponsibilitiesDisclaimer:

Job Responsibilities:
Checks and cleans the various pipes and equipment related to the sprinkler system.
Installs pipes, valves and related equipment, using a variety of plumbing hand and power tools, by measuring, cutting and threading the various pipes.
Repairs malfunctions by determining the cause of the malfunction and making the necessary repairs.
Repairs and makes minor adjustments to the time clocks which control and regulate the intervals between each watering.
Controls the watering schedule by manually setting and operating the time clocks. Ability to install and operate specific apps used for job (WeatherTRAK, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
Uses the department's CMMS to charge time and materials to work orders and to add notes.
Salvages, repairs and reconditions sprinkler piping equipment including valves and sprinkler heads.
Corrects and updates the sprinkler piping system maps by drafting scale based diagrams as changes occur to the system.
Responsible for landscape and installation of a specific area of the University to provide an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment, and accomplished in accordance with university and department policies and procedures.
Regular gardening and landscape maintenance such as fertilizing, mowing, edging, laying sod, pruning, litter cleanup, weeding, snow removal, tree planting, and watering to conserve healthy and vigorous plants.
Control weeds and pests using principles of integrated pest management (IPM).
Must operate different models of tools such as hand pruners, loppers, push and ride lawn mowers, chain saws, leaf blowers, dump trucks, and utility carts.
Work expediently, efficiently, and independently with limited direction from Lead Horticulturist.
Perform snow removal in winter months utilizing shovels, blowers, and plows.
Prepare for and keep campus open and safe during inclement weather such as snow storms.
Knowledge of the common names of trees, shrubs, flowers, weeds and insect pests.
Employees are required to be available for on call snow removal during winter months.
A valid Utah driver's license is required.
Minimum QualificationsThree years previous experience as a Ground Sprinkler Operator or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. Completion of an approved apprenticeship program is preferred.Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
PreferencesThree years previous experience as a Grounds Sprinkler Operator or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service strongly preferred.
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program is preferred.
Applicants demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Would prefer (but not required) experience with grounds maintenance, including knowledge of different plants and their requirements: watering, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, mowing, etc.
Ability to operate power tools and equipment normally associated with landscape maintenance.
Ability to withstand extensive standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, digging and ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
Ability to work in all types of outside weather conditions, including excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive noise, dust, smoke, slippery or uneven surfaces.
Analytical and trouble shooting skills; ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long term goals.
Demonstrated oral and written communications skills; basic computing skills, customer service skills.
