Instructional Support Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in marine and oceans sciences, or related field. Experience collecting fisheries data related to surveys and acoustic telemetry. Hands-on experience performing and organizing fish dissections for stable isotope, aging, and histology samples. Experience with large database management and typical fisheries modeling techniques, specifically with the programming platform R Studio. Experience with Innovasea acoustic telemetry systems including downloading receiver data, deployment of receivers and surgically implanting tags. Ability to work flexible hours (nights, weekends) including multiple days at sea on occasion. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.

Preferred Qualifications:Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in marine and ocean sciences with a focus on fisheries management, policy, and ecology. Five (5) years of experience in related employment requiring real time decision making and team management in the field. Three (3) years experience collecting fisheries data related to surveys and acoustic telemetry. Experience organizing and executing field-based research activities onboard vessels of various sizes, including fishing, survey techniques, and acoustic tagging procedures on various finfish and elasmobranch species. Experience presenting and communicating scientific results to the public and scientific conferences. Experience with local fish ecology and species ID.
Brief Description of Duties:Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Michael Frisk, the Instructional Support Associate will be responsible for working on the Acoustic Gates Project, managing the acoustic array network in support of long-term data collection to monitor finfish and sharks in the state waters of New York and expanded array coverage into Long Island Sound. The position will require onshore and offshore duties. A successful incumbent must possess outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make effective decisions are necessary to be successful in this role.
Responsibilities will include:
Onshore Research Duties:
Data Analysis & Management : Process acoustic telemetry data shortly after downloading receivers. Analyze movement statistics, create maps and GIS, run queries, write reports, and submit to NYSDEC. Maintain a research database composed of millions of detections of fish. Aid in the organization and processing of fish samples acquired through surveys, including database management and dissection procedures.
Procurement : In collaboration with instructional support team, lead the purchasing for acoustic array expansion into Long Island Sound responsible for purchasing all supplies, equipment and service contracts for projects using Wolfmart; obtain quotes, establish blank purchase orders for service contracts, and submit invoices for payment. Establish relationships with frequently used vendors. Procure components to build gear systems, bluetooth data downloading of Vemco receivers, surgical procedures to implant acoustic tags in black seabass, summer flounder, winter flounder and other species, and basic laboratory supplies. Maintain budget records annually. Coordinate all asset/inventory control.
Cruise Coordination : Coordinate all pre-cruise organizing activities and schedule fieldwork and serve as chief scientist. This includes the procurement of diving services contractors used to retrieve mooring systems, chartering fishing boats, scheduling technicians and graduate students, and outside groups such as Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Publications & Reports:
Assist with preparation of reports to sponsors and development of manuscripts for scientific journal publication.
Laboratory Coordination : Assist in the operation and organizing of the daily activities of a 15+ person laboratory, under the Principal Investigator.
At Sea Research Duties:
Chief Scientist:
Serve as chief scientist, responsible for the scientific party (3-5 individuals), representing the science party's concerns to the research vessel captain. Lead cruises to support tagging, downloading receivers and deploying moorings, diving teams and data retrieval.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
