Subject Matter Expert - Applied Ontology

Job Summary: CUBRC has an immediate need for a Senior Ontologist and Subject Matter Expert to work on state-of-the-art research and software development projects. Reporting to CUBRC’s Principal Ontologist, the successful candidate will join an established team comprised of ontologists and software engineers focused on the development and modification of ontologies, knowledge graphs and other software applications that deliver advanced data analysis capabilities to our customers. As a senior staff member and in cooperation with CUBRC’s Principal Ontologist, the successful candidate may serve as a Principal Investigator on specific projects and/or support multiple technical teams as a subject matter expert. Primary duties may include but are not limited to: Project technical requirements collection, development and management; application domain analysis and domain specific ontology development; software application testing; lead or support new business development activities; and support customer service and project management activities as required.Additional responsibilities may include the preparation of project documentation, performance of customer technical briefings, and provide other customer education and training services.Minimum Requirements:A master’s degree with a focus in Applied Ontology (Philosophy, Computer Science, or related disciplines).The ability to work closely with subject matter experts operating in disparate domains to analyze analytic processes and data requirements that result in the development of accurate information models and data transformation methods that support the innovative application of ontologies and other semantic technologies to enable end-user needs.15 years of experience using W3C and semantic web standards and technologies, such as RDF, OWL, SPARQL, and SHACL.15 years of experience using top and mid-level ontologies, in particular the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) and Common Core Ontology (CCO). 15 years of experience developing domain specific ontologies for a variety of applications utilized in defense, intelligence, security and commercial applications.Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to summarize and present work to audiences of varying levels of expertise. This includes use of Microsoft Office 365 tools (Word, Excel, PPT, Teams, etc.) and select Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence).Special Requirements:Continued employment will require that the successful candidate currently possess or obtain and continuously maintain certain specific US Government security clearances as required during their employment with CUBRC. These may include security clearances granted by, but not limited to, the US Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and Energy.Significant short-term travel within CONUS may be required to support customer service and business development related activities.Preferred Qualifications:A Ph.D. degree with a focus in Applied Ontology (Philosophy, Computer Science, Library Science, or related disciplines).15 years of combined active-duty or reserve-duty military service focused on intelligence operations.Demonstrated experience directly interacting with customers to provide superior customer service in support of project technical requirement development and for the execution of project objectives.Demonstrated ability to develop and close on new business opportunities. This includes assisting in group strategic business planning activities, the identification of new business opportunities, the preparation and conduct of customer technical briefings, the preparation of technical proposals responsive to customer requirements, and support project cost estimation activities. Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior level staff which aid in meeting project objectives, requirements development, new business development, etc. Familiarity with general software development and security practices (DEVOPS and SECDEVOPS), data normalization, ETL procedures, data integration processes and tools (especially Karma), entity resolution methods, referent tracking, data workflow tools (especially Apache NiFi), and other similar data analysis tools.Extensive experience utilizing various ontology editors (especially Protégé) and graph databases (e.g., Fuseki, GraphDB).Why CUBRC· 401(k) - No Waiting Period. 100% Vested on date of hire.· 3% company contribution in the first year of employment, company contribution increases over time.
