This is a new Patent Attorney or Patent Agent position within a team of seven senior patent professionals which will report to one of the professionals. The vacancy is in the biotechnology/molecular biology area including vaccine and antibody technologies. Experience with diagnostics is a plus . It is not necessary to have worked in animal health. Working closely with present team members, the candidate will manage a global patent portfolio encompassing a wide range of potential activities including contributing to patent filing strategies that support Zoetis' research pipeline. The candidate is expected to be registered to practice before the USPTO. Experience with Appeals in U.S. and Oppositions/Appeals overseas is a plus. Outline of Responsibilities: Create value by identifying and protecting Zoetis intellectual property, particularly patentable subject matter and trade secrets. Work with Zoetis scientists and engineers to draft and prosecute patent applications, manage a global patent portfolio and (working with team members) contribute to the patent strategy for research and development in biotechnology. Work with outside patent counsel to support the global patent portfolio, for example, by preparing, filing, and prosecuting cases and/or obtaining legal advice. Identify and monitor relevant third-party patents, assist in evaluating said patents and advising on the risk to the business, assist in and/or implementing appropriate actions to ensure freedom to operate, for example, filing by third party observations, oppositions and the like. Provide analysis and advice to Zoetis business development or external innovation teams regarding licensing or acquisition opportunities. Maintain awareness of patent case law and patent practice issues in order to disseminate to the patent team, the legal department and other parts of the business as necessary. Review scientific disclosure requests (manuscripts, posters, presentations) to ensure compliance with internal policies Travel to Zoetis research facilities to meet with scientists on a regular basis. Qualifications (Training, Education, & Prior Experience): Required Qualifications: A bachelors' degree in the pharmaceutical, chemical or biochemical sciences from an accredited institution Admitted to practice for 3 -5 years in front of the USPTO Relevant experience in biotechnological patent practice, including drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the relevant field Optional Qualifications: Advanced degree in a biochemistry related field, preferably with antibody and vaccine patenting experience U.S. Law Degree (Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school) Expected Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Excellent writing skills Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and address issues beyond those raised Excellent client management skills and the ability to deal confidently with the client and legal function colleagues Full time Regular Colleague Any unsolicited resumes sent to Zoetis from a third party, such as an Agency recruiter, including unsolicited resumes sent to a Zoetis mailing address, fax machine or email address, directly to Zoetis employees, or to Zoetis resume database will be considered Zoetis property.
