The Associate Vice President, Research Integrity Officer position is responsible for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and overseeing The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center's ("MD Anderson") research integrity program to foster the responsible conduct of research, research training, and educational activities related to research and research training, discourage research misconduct, and deal promptly with allegations of research misconduct, and ensure that MD Anderson meets its obligations under applicable legal requirements. Reporting to the CSO and working in partnership with MD Anderson Institutional Compliance leadership, the Research Integrity Officer will have lead responsibility for (i) fostering a research environment that promotes the responsible conduct of research, research training, and educational activities related to research and research training, (ii) developing, coordinating, and providing responsible conduct of research education and training to MD Anderson's Workforce and discouraging research misconduct, (iii) partnering with MD Anderson Executive Leadership providing MD Anderson's Workforce with systems and tools to facilitate the responsible conduct of research, research training, and educational activities related to research and research training, (iv) dealing promptly with evidence of possible research misconduct and research misconduct allegations, and administering the institution's written policies and procedures for addressing allegations of research misconduct in compliance with all applicable requirements, including federal, state, and institutional requirements. General Responsibilities The RIO has lead responsibility for ensuring that MD Anderson: • Takes all reasonable and practical steps to foster a research environment that promotes the responsible conduct of research, research training, and activities related to that research or research training, discourages Research Misconduct, and deals promptly with Allegations or evidence of possible Research Misconduct. • Has written policies and procedures for responding to Allegations of Research Misconduct and, working in partnership with MD Anderson's Institutional Compliance, reporting information about Research Misconduct Allegations and related issues to funding and oversight agencies, in accordance with applicable legal and contractual requirements. • Educates its workforce about MD Anderson's Research Misconduct policies and procedures and its commitment to compliance with those policies and procedures. • Takes appropriate interim action during a Research Misconduct proceeding to protect public health, federal and state funds and equipment, and/or the integrity of the implicated research. • Conducts oversight of MD Anderson's Research Misconduct activities and other research integrity functions through MD Anderson in accordance with its policies and procedures. REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION Required: MD, PhD in a biomedical science, or Juris Doctor. EXPERIENCE Required: Five years of administrative, research, or research leadership experience with increasing research or management responsibility in an academic or medical institution including experience handling highly confidential and sensitive information and completing or managing complex integrity investigations in accordance with applicable regulatory and institutional timelines. Preferred: Five to eight years' experience as a researcher in an academic medical center setting as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member, and experience in managing or conducting research misconduct proceedings. Strong organization and communication skills applicable to a large academic medical center. Knowledge and familiarity with policies, procedures, and federal and state laws governing research integrity and research misconduct.
