The Lead Project Engineer is a key role within the Offshore Renewables Business, focusing on the delivery of large-scale offshore wind projects in the US and overseas. The individual is responsible to facilitate the design process of an offshore wind project from origination through feasibility, concept, FEED (Front End Engineering Design), detail design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and handover to operations. This role focuses on providing overall technical coordination, leading design assurance, ensuring compliance with industry standards, meeting project requirements, and maximizing returns on investment throughout the project lifecycle. The Lead Project Engineer will develop the detailed processes required to implement Design Assurance principles across the Project. This includes adherence to existing project validation tools including Lessons Learned, Project Decisions, Schedule, Project Risk Register, and Certification requirements. In addition, this role will oversee implementation of the Engineering State Gate process, facilitating technical review sessions, ensuring participation from relevant Package teams, reporting status of deliverables, and maintaining list of outstanding items. The Engineering Stage Gate process is critical to the Project, and the Senior Engineer will be responsible for ensuring all technical deliverables have been evaluated and reviewed with agreed criteria and reporting of the status, including up to Senior Management. This role will be part of the Engineering Management Team and will provide cross-functional support across all Packages Job Duties: Design Assurance: • Develop process to ensure Design Assurance is implemented across all relevant Packages within the Project. • Ensure project validation tools are being utilized in the overall design and development. • Ensure that IBR/AGR processes are being followed as it relates to design assurance objectives. • Record the rationale for the decisions made and/or the overall status of the design assurance indicators in the associated design assurance checklist. • Confirm risks associated with design have been appropriately mitigated and documented to ensure design certainty. • Assess the risk as the project approaches key technical decision points; and provides confirmation that the technical solution is being managed appropriately through the implementation of the governing procedures, and regulations. Design Management: • Implement global Design Management Procedure across all packages on the Project. • Coordinate and facilitate Engineering Stage Gate Reviews through all phases of project execution including Feasibility, Concept, Basic Design, Advanced Design, and Detail Design. • Provide input and feedback into design maturity and advancement of design stages. • Inform the project decision making process, giving a clear understanding of the level of fixation associated with the design and the level of certainty. • Formalize the record keeping of the design management process and Stage Gate reviews through technical assessments, minutes of meetings, and project decisions via the Project EDMS. Design Safety: • Prioritize and enforce safety protocols in the design phase, managing the Design Risk Register. • Identify potential risks associated with the overall design or potential challenges during manufacturing, installation and operation and develop contingency plans. Design Optimization: • Identify opportunities to optimize costs without compromising project integrity, performance, or safety. • Evaluate and recommend innovative solutions to enhance the performance, reliability, and cost effectiveness of the offshore windfarm and transmission system. • Compile Technical Opportunities Register to capture opportunities for optimization and innovation. Reporting : • Develop reporting methodology to illustrate Package progress through each phase of the Engineering Stage Gate process. • Provide weekly, bi-weekly, monthly updates on Design Review and Assurance as required. • Develop project dashboard for tracking of key items associated with Design Review and Assurance across Packages, including compliance to existing project validation tools Skills, Knowledge & Experience: Education: • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline with a higher-level degree (e.g., MSc) desirable. • Chartered, PE, or working towards Chartered/PE status (or relevant equivalent) desirable. Experience: • Extensive experience designing and working in the offshore industry, preferably offshore wind. • Significant experience working in teams involved in large multidisciplinary work packages in international environments. • Experience in dealing with health and safety and environmental legislation associated with construction, marine and offshore projects. • Extensive experience with Engineering Design and Design Management on large scale infrastructure projects, offshore wind, or oil and gas. • Experience with implementation of methodologies associated with design management principles, design assurance, and design safety.
