The Senior Director of HSE oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of HSE programs at the Lebanon Medicine Foundry. They ensure compliance with global and regulatory standards and address all health, safety, and environmental issues. This role manages the HSE team's productivity and development. It also provides HSE oversight for all site operations, including R&D in small molecule, biologics, nucleic acid therapies, utilities, waste operations, labs, emergency response, and administrative facilities. The Senior Director of HSE provides leadership, direction, and governance to the HSE organization at the site. They connect the Medicine Foundry HSE teams with LRLHSE and the corporate HSE group, ensuring alignment. This role also manages systems to support regulatory inspections. As a member of the Medicine Foundry Lead Team, they help shape strategic direction, build organizational capability, and manage site operations. The Lead Team focuses on long-term business goals, organizational development, and addressing issues that cross multiple teams and impact broader corporate and external contexts. During the project delivery and startup phase (targeted for 2027), Lead Team roles will be fluid as we support project delivery, build the organization, and implement systems for R&D operations. We will focus on establishing the site culture and developing business processes to enable small molecule, biologic, and nucleic acid therapy production. This role requires strong collaboration, creativity, and resilience as the site grows. Initially based at the Technology Center Campus in Indianapolis, the role will transition to Lebanon, Indiana, as construction advances. Key Responsibilities Pre-Startup and Startup Phase: Be a collaborative, inclusive, energetic leader and support the broader lead team across all aspects of operational readiness and startup. Build the organization with the necessary capability, capacity and culture to operate this facility to the highest standards of safety and operational excellence. Define the site HSE priorities & roadmap in order to develop and implement the systems and processes needed to run the site. This includes using existing Lilly knowledge where necessary, but also incorporating external experiences and learning. Establish and serve as the leader of the site HSE Lead Team, ensuring safety and environmental focus is incorporated throughout project delivery and startup. Support the project team to deliver the facility as a key partner. Provide feedback and support on design decisions and startup plan impacting HSE aspects. Collaborate to ensure the right decisions are made to meet project deliverables and compliance requirements. Partner with Global Facilities Delivery (Lilly’s global capital delivery organization) on contractor safety. Develop and adapt organizational structure to provide correct and capable resources and management to deliver the site to a full scale GMP manufacturing scale, including establishment of environmental and PSM expertise. Build technical relationships with the relevant corporate/global departments and sponsors strategic corporate initiatives at a site level. Post Startup: Provide program ownership for the HSE Management System to ensure Compliance with relevant regulations and Lilly Global standards for Health Safety and Environment. Continue to define and support the site HSE priorities & roadmap; integrating functional Lead Team partners as required. Develop and lead the HSE business initiatives, HSE Plan and HSE metrics. Ensure reporting requirements are continually met, including all environmental reporting and recordkeeping. Have external focus, benchmark standard processes across network and externally. Develop future management and technical leadership for the site and network/global roles. Advance critical environmental, health and safety issues as appropriate to line management and corporate HSE management. Minimum Requirements: Masters degree in a relevant discipline with at least 10 years HSE experience, with 7 of those years in an HSE leadership role Additional Skills/Preferences: CIH, CSP and/or CHM certifications preferred Experienced leadership of HSE programs and HSE management systems in a Research and Development setting. Additional experience implementing HSE programs in Manufacturing HSE preferred. Experience with implementing and leading compliance programs in accordance with regulatory requirements, including environmental and recordkeeping. Must collaborate with regulatory agencies on environmental, health, and safety requirements Experience working at an API manufacturing site with a Process Safety Management program is preferred. Must have a strong ability to form effective relationships at all levels. This candidate must be able to work closely with the Site Leadership team to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and internal decision making processes, and be able to connect and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization on site.
