Job Title: Lab Technician Department: Materials Reports To: Development Engineer Location: Brighton, CO Position Summary: The Lab Technician will support research to develop, improve, and scale up materials and processes for use in CO2 capture as part of the Materials Scale Up group. They will assist the needs of research engineers and scientists by preparing samples, operating analytical instrumentation, and analyzing samples. They will be analyzing and scaling up novel materials and characterizing material properties with the goal of delivering improved formulations at pilot plant and commercial scales. They will work under the supervision of research scientists and engineers to meet production targets and company goals. The technician should understand and apply basic analytical chemistry principles, follow safe laboratory practices, and maintain a safe working environment. Objectives & Responsibilities Preparation of scaled up organic formulations using different contactors, solvents, pore fills, etc. Measure organic formulation properties: viscosity and density as a function of temperature and dilution with water (needed for activation methods and modeling) Evaluate reproducibility of scaling up formulations Perform heat capacity measurements and heat of adsorption experiments Sample generation and characterization to support modeling and process teams as future testing is requested Operation and execution of new testing protocols developed by team leads Data collection for data sheets and model development Load samples and analyze data from Analytical Instruments such as TGA, CHN, Tristar and DVS (Gravimetric gas adsorption analyzer) Assist with bench scale sample analysis on house-built reactors to assist multiple team efforts Geometrical assessment of new contactors using optical microscopy, calipers, and balances Prepare materials - activation at powder to core scale Maintain a clean lab environment Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Engineering or Related Field. 2-3 years of experience in a lab environment Skills Strong technical laboratory skills Basic data workup skills (using excel templates or existing python scripts) Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Strong organizational and documentation skills Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements for laboratory equipment Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment Prior experience working in dynamic vapor sorption (DVS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and/or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) Prior experience with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and/or Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy Physical Requirements Must be able to lift and carry equipment as necessary.
