Position Title: Chair, Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences (Full Professor) Location: Halmos College of Arts and Sciences, Nova Southeastern University, Dania Beach, Florida Position Type: 12-Month Permanent Position The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) seeks an experienced and dynamic individual to serve as Chair for a 12-month permanent position at the rank of Full Professor. The successful candidate will lead the department in fulfilling its mission, vision, and goals while contributing to teaching and research activities. Position Summary The Chair serves as the administrative leader of the department, providing strategic direction, resource management, and fostering a collaborative environment. This role is primarily administrative (80%), with some teaching and research responsibilities (20%). Minimum Qualifications Doctorate in a relevant field within Marine and Environmental Sciences. At least 5 years of experience in college-level teaching and grant writing. Demonstrated success in securing extramural funding. Leadership and management experience in higher education, including faculty development and resource management. Responsibilities Administrative Duties (80%) 1. Leadership and Strategic Planning Establish and implement the department’s vision in alignment with the college and university goals. Develop strategic plans, goals, and initiatives to enhance departmental performance and innovation. Foster a student-centered culture that supports academic excellence and inclusivity. Cultivate an environment that promotes responsibility, mentorship, and professional growth among faculty and staff. 2. Department Management Oversee the department's structure, resource allocation, and performance assessment. Manage budgets, space, and course scheduling; assign faculty to courses. Supervise faculty and staff, ensuring adherence to university policies for promotions and salary adjustments. Prepare and submit annual reports and accreditation-related documentation. Maintain up-to-date and relevant curricula and ensure instructional quality. 3. Faculty and Staff Development Recruit and mentor faculty to enhance teaching, research, and professional development. Support faculty in securing grants, producing research, and participating in professional activities. Promote diversity and foster a collegial atmosphere within the department. 4. Communication and Outreach Act as a liaison between the department and stakeholders, including the Dean, university administration, and external entities. Promote the department’s accomplishments to students, businesses, and the broader community. Ensure timely and professional communication regarding department activities and policies. 5. Additional Administrative Duties Serve on university committees and engage in strategic planning initiatives. Take on special assignments to support the college and university as needed. Teaching and Research Duties (20%) Teach two courses annually in the candidate’s area of expertise. Maintain an active research agenda and secure extramural funding. Contribute to service activities that advance the mission of the university and department.
