OVERVIEW: We are seeking a talented Controls Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in providing controls system (DCS) programming/changes, process development, project implementation, and process engineering support at the Somerville, TN plants. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES: None DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Safety install, maintain, diagnose, repair, remove, and adjust electrical equipment. Maintain complex systems embodying electronic and electro-mechanical principles including PLC’s and servos. De-bottleneck current manufacturing processes through the optimization of existing equipment, improved use of resources, or the acquisitions of new technology & equipment. Assist in the development of flow sheet design, technical evaluation of equipment, conduct plant evaluations, and conduct the commissioning of new manufacturing processes. Modify controls logic (DCS and PLC) to improve and optimize processes. Assist project team to program controls logic (DCS and PLC) when installing a new process or new equipment. Troubleshoot/Diagnose and solve existing manufacturing /quality problems to improve up time and first-time prime quality. Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards. Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to support production processes. Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential. Responsible for designing, programming, repairing, and maintaining PLC systems. Familiarization with AB PLC processors, CompactLogix, Control Logix, I/O modules but, not limited to only AB control systems. Inspect equipment for proper functioning and perform preventative maintenance duties per manufacturers specifications. The controls technician will troubleshoot and maintain all controls components such as PCL, safety devices, HMI, servo drives, process hardware and robots. Tests newly installed machines and equipment to ensure fulfillment of contract specifications. Evaluates, analyzes, and makes recommendations on products, designs and cost improvements to improve the competitive position of the company. Procures materials needed to construct prototypes and supervises the team of new models. Tests the ability of machines to perform designated tasks. Develops models of alternate processing methods to test feasibility of new applications of system components and recommends implementation of improved procedures. Analyzes test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional and performance specifications. Analyzes, evaluates and recommends cost improvement ideas through product, vendor, and design changes. The controls technician will assist in all areas of automated equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. This position does require mechanical,electrical, and instrumentation work. Effectively communicate with operators, mechanics, engineers, and leadership team. May be on-call nights for emergencies or unscheduled repairs. REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES: Knowledgeable with Allen Bradley Controls Logix, Compact Logix, RS Logix, etc. Knowledge of AC/DC motors and VFD’s. Ability to read electrical schematics. PLC, HMI, SCADA proficiency. Ability to work without supervision. Must be able to effectively work with customers (internal and external), and to work well with people at all levels of the company. Must possess good communication skills, both written and oral, sound business judgment, strong interpersonal and technical skills and a professional demeanor. Ability Train other electricians/mechanics and team members Experience in health & beauty chemicals, and material handling are a plus. Familiarity with database, project management, spreadsheet, and word processing software. Knowledge of Six Sigma is preferred. Experience with project commissioning is a plus. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science degree in Process Technology, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. 5 years of related experience in an engineering support department.
