Salary: $60,000/yr United University Professions (UUP), the union that represents the faculty and staff at the State University of New York’s four-year campuses, teaching hospitals and medical schools, seeks a content writer for its Communications Department. UUP is the largest higher education union in the country, representing more than 42,000 academic and professional members, and retirees. The content writer will work at UUP’s central offices in Latham, NY. UUP also allows for its employees to work remotely for up to two days each week. This is an entry level position. Responsibilities will include: Writing bylined stories and other assignments for the union’s two membership magazines, The Voice and The Echo. This may include interviewing UUP members at campuses across the state for news stories, feature stories or profiles for The Voice and The Echo. Each magazine is published four times a year. Contributing written items for UUP’s website and a weekly electronic newsletter that is emailed to the UUP membership. Covering live events, including (but not limited to) outdoor rallies, marches, union events on campuses, press conferences, and UUP’s Delegate Assembly, which is held twice each year. This will include taking photos and/or video and writing stories. Covering live and/or virtual events and meetings with lawmakers to advocate for SUNY in the state budget process. Assisting with proofreading and editing of newsletters, magazines, news releases and statements, reports by UUP officers, and a host of other editing/proofreading assignments. Contributing photos for UUP’s social media channels. Writing, editing and proofreading content for marketing emails, print pieces (flyers, palm cards, etc.) and other communications sent out by UUP’s Legislative and Benefits departments. The ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and work under tight, time-sensitive deadlines. Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field is required. Writing samples are required. Please include links to published work, writing samples or an online portfolio with your resume and cover letter. Excellent writing and proofreading skills, including a working knowledge of AP style. Attention to details and experience working in a fast-paced working environment. Ability to meet deadlines and to be able to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to travel, particularly in the months before and during New York’s legislative session (October through June). Must possess a valid driver’s license and own a vehicle or have the ability to drive a company vehicle. Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed. Experience using a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera and shooting video is a plus. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and have familiarity with Adobe Photoshop. Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro (or other video editing software) is a plus. Knowledge of virtual programs such as Zoom, GoToMeeting and Microsoft Teams is required. Prior experience as a newspaper reporter or television news reporter (two years or more) is a plus. Prior social media experience (writing items for posting, taking and posting photos/videos, etc.) is a plus.
