This position is primarily responsible for providing legal guidance on real estate matters essential for renewable energy projects, including drafting and negotiating various real estate documents such as lease agreements, co-tenancy agreements, shared facilities agreements, and crossing agreements. Key Responsibilities: Legal Advisory on Real Estate : Offer specialized legal advice on real estate aspects of renewable project development, including preparing, reviewing, and negotiating necessary documentation. Title and Land Rights Management : Oversee title document review, resolve title issues, negotiate title insurance policies, and manage land rights acquisition. Collaborate with developers and support staff, utilizing land management software. Interdepartmental Collaboration : Work closely with legal teams across various U.S. offices and maintain strong alignment with business partners to find practical, business-focused legal solutions. Project Development Support : Provide strategic feedback on project readiness by analyzing development timelines and risks across all project inputs, including real estate and permitting. Solution-Oriented Approach : Proactively address real estate and permitting issues, offering practical, problem-solving solutions. Coordinate efforts with paralegals and specialists for efficient task distribution. Vendor and External Relations : Liaise with title companies and surveyors to meet project milestones, ensuring timely completion of proforma and survey deliverables. Contract Drafting and Negotiation : Draft a variety of real estate documents, manage risk, and offer practical solutions on disagreements with counterparties. Property Acquisition : Facilitate the purchase of properties essential for project assets, such as substations and operational facilities. Risk Mitigation and Permit Coordination : Collaborate with utilities, banks, and other stakeholders to secure necessary agreements and permits, ensuring project readiness across multiple states. Construction Readiness : Work with legal leadership to assess and mitigate risks as projects transition to the construction phase, supporting construction approval processes. Investor and Financial Alignment : Support the Structured Finance team by addressing due diligence questions, preparing data rooms, and assisting with transaction documentation for tax equity investments. Qualifications: Education : J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school Bar Admission : Licensed to practice law in the U.S., with preference for membership in Illinois or Texas Experience : Minimum of 5 years as a real estate attorney with renewable energy expertise, particularly in solar, battery, and/or wind. Familiarity with energy transmission, interconnection agreements, permitting, and tax agreements is beneficial. Industry Knowledge : Experience in energy-related legal work within the U.S., focusing on renewable project development and construction. Skills : Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, work independently, and collaborate within a team.
