The Commercial Manager will be responsible for driving revenue growth, managing client relationships, and leading the commercial team in business development activities. The role involves developing strategies to optimize shipping routes, managing pricing and contractual agreements, and maximizing vessel utilization and profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
Revenue and Profitability:
Develop and implement commercial strategies to achieve revenue targets and improve profitability. Analyze market trends, pricing, and competitor activities to enhance competitiveness and capture market share. Identify new business opportunities and build relationships with potential clients in the maritime and logistics industry.
Client Relationship Management:
Act as the primary point of contact for key accounts, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring customer satisfaction. Negotiate contracts, rates, and terms with customers, brokers, and agents to maximize commercial value. Collaborate with clients to tailor shipping solutions that meet their specific needs and service requirements.
Market and Competitive Analysis:
Conduct regular market assessments to monitor demand, industry developments, and competitive positioning. Evaluate and recommend adjustments to pricing structures and terms based on market conditions and company objectives. Provide insights and guidance to senior management on potential growth opportunities and risks.
Business Development:
Expand the customer base by identifying and pursuing new business opportunities within designated regions and sectors. Participate in industry networking events, conferences, and trade shows to enhance the company’s profile. Work with the marketing team to develop promotional materials, presentations, and proposals that support business development efforts.
Team Leadership and Development:
Lead, coach, and develop the commercial team to achieve sales targets and promote a high-performance culture. Conduct regular performance reviews, set goals, and provide feedback to team members. Ensure the team is equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in a competitive environment.
Operational Coordination:
Collaborate with operations and logistics teams to ensure seamless service delivery to clients. Monitor vessel utilization rates, schedules, and routes to optimize efficiency and profitability. Address operational issues that may impact customer satisfaction or service reliability, working proactively to find solutions.
Contract and Risk Management:
Oversee the negotiation, drafting, and administration of customer contracts to ensure compliance and risk mitigation. Ensure that contracts are aligned with company policies and legal requirements. Work with legal and finance teams to manage risk exposure related to commercial agreements.
Key Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Maritime Studies, or related field (Master’s degree or MBA is a plus). Experience:
Minimum of 5 years in a commercial role within the maritime/shipping industry or logistics sector. Skills:
Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation skills. Excellent analytical abilities with a strategic and results-driven mindset. Proficiency in shipping software and CRM systems. Knowledge of maritime regulations, chartering terms, and industry best practices. Ability to manage and motivate a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Additional Requirements:
Flexibility to travel as needed for client meetings and industry events. Demonstrated track record of achieving and exceeding commercial targets. Familiarity with contract law and international shipping regulations. Must be currently authorized to work in the US, no visa or sponsorship at this time.
