The City of Lake Alfred seeks motivated and skilled Firefighters/EMTs to join our Fire Department in a part-time, reserve capacity. This role involves combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, responding to emergency calls, performing search and rescue operations, and providing life support both independently and under a physician's direction. The ideal candidate will also maintain fire department equipment, apparatus, and facilities. This position reports to the Fire Captain and Fire Chief.
Key Responsibilities:

- Participate in fire drills and training classes on firefighting, first-aid, fire prevention, and public education.
- Inspect fire equipment to ensure proper operation, refueling equipment, and report needed maintenance.
- Perform general maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
- Respond to alarms for fires and other emergencies, operating fire equipment such as hose lines and rescue tools.
- Don and use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) when necessary.
- Conduct rescue and first-aid operations in both fire and non-fire situations.
- Perform salvage operations like placing covers, removing debris, and sweeping water.
- Conduct water rescue operations using boats.
- Engage in emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
- Complete retraining and certification as required by law.
- May be required to act as a step-up driver engineer when necessary.
- Other duties as directed by the Fire Chief.
Qualifications:
- State of Florida Fire Fighter II Certification.
- State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of fire department operations, equipment, and fire prevention inspections.
- Familiarity with city streets, alleys, buildings, and layouts.
- Skill in patient assessment and the use of firefighting tools and apparatus.
- Ability to perform mechanical work for firefighting equipment maintenance.
- Ability to work efficiently in emergency conditions and quickly adapt to changing situations.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Physical ability to meet the demands of firefighting and emergency response.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must meet all state firefighting requirements.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Work occurs in an outdoor environment with exposure to bright/dim light, extreme heat or cold, wet/humid conditions, and high noise levels.
- Heavy physical labor, requiring lifting and pushing objects between 50 and 100 pounds frequently.
- Exposure to hazards including traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, chemicals, explosives, and violence.
- Ability to perform job tasks that require normal visual acuity, hearing, speaking, color perception, and other sensory abilities.
