Requirements / Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Enforces regulations at a school swimming pool to prevent accidents
Rescues persons in danger of drowning and administers cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and first aid when necessary
Checks air temperature and chemical content and temperature of water, and brings
nonstandardconditions to the attention of persons responsible for pool maintenance
Inspects pool equipment and reports unsanitary, hazardous, or unsafe conditions
certificated personnel
Performs minor emergency repair, maintenance, and clean-up work required to prevent
accidents and to maintain maximum health conditions
Answers inquiries and gives information to the public regarding swimming programs
and special events
Teaching swimming skills to students under the direction of a certificated instructor
Monitor swim pool locker rooms
Set up pool for water polo and swim competitions, operate timing systems and assist in
meet operation
Performs related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Regulations governing the operation and use of school swimming pools
Methods of rescuing persons from water
First aid, including methods of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Health standards and safety practices for swimming pools
Emergency procedures to obtain Fire Department Rescue Squad services
EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of progressively responsible experience in public lifeguarding in an organized
setting of young people is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of valid certificates in the following areas:
American Red Cross - Lifeguard Training and CPR/First Aid/AED or American Red
Cross - Water Safety Instructor
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Incumbent must maintain physical condition necessary for swimming and proper
application of rescue and first-aid techniques
Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl
Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion
Lift and move inert bodies in a water environment
Must be able to safely lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds
Reach in all directions
Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time
Work predominantly in outdoor environment, including possible adverse weather
conditions
Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures
Speaking and hearing to exchange information

A Lifeguard protects persons using a school swimming pool by guarding against hazards or accidents and, provides rescue and first-aid services, and takes protective action in emergencies as necessary.

Remain alert and maintain focus of attention for long periods of time without being
distracted
Enforce rules and regulations and maintain discipline
Work effectively with students, school employees, and the public
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard in a noisy facility

EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
