Job Summary

Paramedics are responsible for responding to emergency medical calls, providing on-site aid and transporting patients safely to medical facilities. They are expected to assess patients' conditions and implement first-aid procedures. Additional duties include maintaining equipment, filing reports and transporting patients between hospitals.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Render pre-hospital emergency medical care according to established medical protocols.
  • Drive Mobile Intensive Care Units to emergency scenes, transport accident victims and medical patients to hospitals.
  • Assist and coordinate with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Perform a variety of emergency medical treatment services at the basic and advanced life support levels.
  • Employ safe lifting and moving techniques. Maintain ambulance vehicle and equipment.
  • Assist in training public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) standard first aid, and emergency medical techniques. Participate in public health screening.
  • Assist EMS Director and/or EMS Shift Supervisor in performing the full range of advanced life support functions.
  • Handle radio communications during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Perform the duties as assigned by EMS Shift Supervisor or EMS Director, when needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of pre-hospital emergency medical care.
  • Medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Advanced and basic life support and emergency medical techniques.
  • Techniques of proper drug administration.
  • Accepted Emergency driving techniques.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance.
  • All applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Infectious disease universal precautions and decontamination of ambulance and equipment.
Skills:
  • Provide emergency medical care at MICU level, such as cardiac monitoring and defibrillation, intravenous and drug therapy, airway management with endotracheal intubations
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Prepare concise and comprehensive written reports.
Ability to:
  • Learn the geography of local area.
  • Think and act quickly in emergencies and judge situations and people accurately.
  • Work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Maintain body equilibrium when bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, reaching, or stretching arms, legs, or other parts of body, and to physically maneuver over or upon varying terrain, surfaces, or physical structures.
  • Work 12-24 hour shifts to include weekends and holidays.
  • Provide routine maintenance of station, vehicle, or equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-employees and those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain personal health and physical fitness to perform all job duties.
  • Pay attention to detail and confidentiality.
  • Perform duties with minimal written/verbal instruction and/or supervision.
  • Utilize written processes and procedures as means for accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Always maintain a professional appearance and attitude that reflects positively on the City, Department, and yourself.
  • Follow protocol guidance that does not endanger or negatively impact the outcome of patients served by our department.
  • Completion of patient care reports prior to the end of shift
