Department: Security
Reports to: Chief of Security
Employee Status: Part-time, Non-exempt
Primary Work Location: La Jolla
Work Schedule: Thursday – Saturday, 10:30 AM - 7:00 PM. Sunday 10:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Some special event hours.
Salary Range: $17.86 - $18.80 per hour
JOB SUMMARY: The Security Services Representative (SSR) is designed to provide exceptional customer service to all members of the MCASD organization and enhance the museum visitor experience. The SSR is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of MCASD staff, visitors, the art collection, and the physical building. SSRs will monitor and enforce MCASD policies in order to safeguard the collection from damage or theft and make appropriate business decisions under various safety, security, and emergency-related situations. Support mission and vision of Museum throughout performance of duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform interior patrols of museum galleries.
- Ensure museum visitors adhere to company policy to preserve the collection and prevent theft or damage.
- Ensure that daily security patrols are performed properly.
- Complete safety and security audits and reports, including Incident Reports and Observation Reports.
- Impart knowledge of museum exhibits, events, and of the surrounding area to patrons.
- Respond to any emergency events (e.g. medical emergencies, natural disasters, etc.).
- Additional duties may include exterior facility patrols and after-hours vehicle escort.
- Participate in scheduled training sessions and becomes trained in all exhibitions and programming; provide information to visitors about the Museums’ institutional history, exhibitions, and public programs.
- Ensure safe work environment through knowledge of and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Flexibility to work alternate, part time, or special event shifts, including weekends and/or after hours.
- Follow policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE: Good verbal and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a challenging, dynamic environment and work with all levels of employees, visitors, and trustees. Ability to interact with the public in a popular tourist destination, field questions, and provide information about the Museum’s institutional history, membership, exhibitions, public programs, and visitor services. Ability to learn and possess knowledge of museum exhibitions, events, and the surrounding area. Ability to empathize with all participants.
Strong attention to detail and multi-tasking skills while working with on-going distractions and occasionally high-volume attendance. Ability to perform crowd control and provide clear guidance and direction. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy. Ability to respond to emergency events which may require rendering medical assistance, performing 911 notifications, and providing evacuation support during fire alarm, earthquake, or other events. Ability to learn and be familiar with MCASD site specific Emergency Action Plans. Depending on the shift, additional duties may include exterior facility patrols and staff escorts after hours.
Ability to work with minimal supervision. Possess basic technical skills. Professional dress and demeanor, conformance with dress code guidelines. High school diploma and one year recent, relevant experience or any equivalent education and experience. Some post high school related course work preferred. Prior museum and/or art related experience preferred. Bilingual preferred.

BACKGROUND CHECKS AND LICENSING: Professional references and criminal background checks. CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or ability to obtain through MCASD-provided training.
SPECIAL LICENSING: Must possess and maintain an active BSIS Security Guard Card.
