Position Purpose:

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture to obtain blood samples for laboratory testing. This position ensures proper patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, and handling to maintain specimen integrity and patient safety. The Phlebotomist interacts with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff to deliver high-quality care and support the diagnostic process.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Perform venipuncture accurately and efficiently to collect blood samples from patients in accord with standardized protocols and procedures.
  2. Ensure proper identification of patients and specimens to maintain accuracy and prevent errors.
  3. Label and handle specimens according to established protocols and laboratory standards.
  4. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper disposal of used needles and other materials.
  5. Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, addressing their concerns and ensuring a positive experience.
  6. Follow infection control and safety procedures to protect patients, staff, and oneself from potential hazards.
  7. Maintain accurate records of all specimens collected and ensure timely data entry into the laboratory information system.
  8. Assist with inventory management and ordering of supplies as needed.
  9. Stay updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques, protocols, and best practices through continuing education and training.
  10. Collaborate with healthcare providers and laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow and quality patient care.
  11. Assist in providing patient referrals and maintaining a logbook.
  12. Assist the medical staff during the exam.
  13. Collect and input data for billing and reporting purposes.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  3. Certification in phlebotomy (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT) preferred.
  4. Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a phlebotomist in a clinical setting.
  5. Experience in working with clients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  6. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures.
  7. Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen collection and labeling.
  10. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
  11. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
