Phlebotomists perform blood draws, specimen collection and urine drug screen collections for hospital and non-hospital patients of all ages. Communicates with physicians, nursing, staff, managers and co-workers, as appropriate. This position responds quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or response to phlebotomy/specimen collection.

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, capillary and heel sticks) on all patients.
  • Performs specimen collection according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Labels all specimens per established laboratory procedures. Properly identifies all patients per laboratory/hospital policy which conform to the National Patient Safety Guidelines.
  • Completes blood bank bands accurately and completely according to blood bank procedures to ensure proper patient identification and safe blood transfusions.
  • Communicates with patients and family members in a way that can be easily understood.
  • Obtains feedback regarding specimen collection instructions and post-phlebotomy instructions as necessary.
  • Performs error free urine drug screen collection and accurately completes all paperwork. Maintains certification for urine drug screen collections on an on-going basis.

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of hospital and laboratory compliance programs.
  • Ability to positively interact with persons of different ethnic, spiritual, moral and cultural beliefs
  • Exhibits effective decision-making skills

  • High school diploma (or Equivalent Certificate from an accredited program) or higher degree
  • Valid USA driver’s license
  • Must have clean driving record that follows Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s driving guidelines

  • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course
  • Previous experience in phlebotomy or healthcare
