Job SummaryThe Phlebotomist supports efficient laboratory operations by performing blood draws, processing specimens, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role ensures patient comfort and adheres to established safety and procedural standards.Key ResponsibilitiesPerform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge them for processing.Record maintenance data, decontaminate equipment, and update patient information.Collect and store specimens (e.g., blood, urine, fecal) according to established procedures.Clearly explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a courteous manner.Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needle techniques.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes for accuracy.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Verify requisitions or computer labels against scripts for 100% accuracy.Package specimens securely for transport, maintaining required temperature and specimen integrity.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow specific protocols for specimen handling.Attend annual department training sessions and stay updated on procedures.Respond to inquiries, answer telephone calls, and provide laboratory results when necessary.Required QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED.Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in specific states).At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.2-4 years of overall experience in a related role.Preferred QualificationsStrong patient interaction and communication skills, both in person and over the phone.Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectively.Experience working in a healthcare environment with diverse patient populations.Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and specimen tracking software.CertificationsPhlebotomy certification as required by state regulations.
