Job Description
Cabinet Peaks Medical Center is looking for a Phlebotomist to join our Laboratory Department!
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager or Lead Phlebotomist the Phlebotomist assumes the responsibility for performing venipuncture and related procedures under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the hospital and department.
Major Job Duties & Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on neonates through geriatric populations.
Proficient in the collection of all types of culture as well as able to instruct patients on the safe and correct collection technique in accordance with department policies and guidelines.
Accurately orders and cancels tests in the Meditech LIS system. Ensures correct patient identification and information when performing computer accessions.
Verifies patient identification prior to collection and labels patient specimens correctly.
Answers all telephone calls promptly and courteously. Obtains and delivers clear and accurate phone message, with primary emphasis on accuracy and superior customer relations and telephone etiquette
Consistently demonstrates the ability to organize and prioritize tasks, dealing with them promptly. Takes responsibility for completing all applicable tasks during work shift, without sacrificing quality of work.
Handles incoming specimens, including those for reference laboratory as well as the general laboratory.
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
Must be able to perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on neonates through geriatric populations.
Must have knowledge of the collection of all types of cultures as well as able to instruct patients on the safe and correct collection technique in accordance with department policies and guidelines.
Must possess knowledge of the overall operation of the laboratory department to including office procedures, accounting / billing, ordering of supplies ,and availability as well as correct filing of all pertinent laboratory forms.
Must possess ability to understand instructions, reason, and make sound medical judgments.
Must possess ability to understand meaning of words, terminology, and ideas associated with the position.
Must be able to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately at the high school level.
Must possess ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform invasive procedures.
Must possess ability to perceive similarities and differences in color.
Must possess sufficient hand and finger dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
Must possess ability to perceive pertinent detail in verbal and or tabular material.
Excellent customer relations and communication skills required.
Must be able to assist and respond to trauma events and post mortem examination.
Education Requirements
High school graduate or equivalent.
Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
If not nationally certified, must become so within 1 year from date of hire.
Experience
One year of experience preferred.
