Job Description
Properly identifies patient, draws blood samples and sends to laboratory for analysis. The Phlebotomist maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken, and may perform waived or moderate complex tests in laboratory setting.

Headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we serve patients across Louisiana and Mississippi through a network of hospitals, clinics, physicians, elderly housing and integrated information system. Our health system has partnered with the State of Louisiana as it transforms its healthcare delivery system. The partnership includes inpatient acute care and primary care delivery in Baton Rouge and Bogalusa.

Properly identifies patient, draws blood samples and sends to laboratory for analysis. The Phlebotomist maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken, and may perform waived or moderate complex tests in laboratory setting.
Responsibilities
- Compliance / Safety
- Obtains written requisition for all procedures ordered with all correct information on requisition including diagnosis, MD, patient information.
- Properly labels the blood tubes immediately after collection.
- Keeps work area neat and clean including phlebotomy trays and Outpatient collection areas. Stocks and rotates supplies as needed.
- Follows all infection control procedures proper protocol for maintaining a sterile site for the collection of blood samples.
- Understands the protocol for proper identification of the patient and the use of two patient identiers used by the Lab to identify the patient.
- Informs Lab supervisor when patient care events or interventions should be carried out in the event of an adverse reaction due to phlebotomy.
- Adheres to infection control practices. Has completed required TB skin tests.
- Team work / Customer service
- Carries out assignments and workload with little need of direction, good time management, uses time between tests to departmental advantage by assissting co-workers. Uses LIS to obtain patient orders, labels and collection lists. Uses the LIS to enter specimen collection Information. Ability to order ABN following the correct protocal. Communicate ABN with patients.
- Carries appropriate part of workload including helping to answer telephone and display excellent communication skills with fellow team members and customers.
- Refrains from complaining, and demonstrates the ability to work as a team to better serve our patients. Help with clerical duties. Resolves pending log and HRP issues before end of shift.
- When requested, adjusts personal schedule to meet department/unit needs.
- Productivity
- Collects all blood in a timely manner in an Outpatient and Inpatient setting.
- Routinely and carefully prepares specimens to be routed to appropriate reference Lab for all test not performed on site.
- Utilizes time to accomplish work in an efficient manner.
- Technical Skill
- Demonstrates proper collection of blood including order of collection.
- Collects Non-DOT drug screens according to policy and without clerical mistakes.
- Demonstrates the proper knowledge of drawing blood with different safety devices and which device should be used for various patients.
- Demonstrates the protocol for drawing above IV sites and proper knowledge of maintaining the integrity of the sample.
- Other duties as assigned
- Adheres to hospital policy on the usage of Paid Time Off and Extended Illness Time.
- Reports to work on time, and if necessary, reports tardiness to appropriate person.
- Maintains a professional appearance, according to job requirements, at all times.
- Employee shall conform to regulatory, customer and organizational requirements.
- Attended all required mandatory educational sessions.
- Operates equipment and performs job-related duties in a safe manner. Responds appropriately to fire, safety and disaster situations. Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the appropriate manner for optimal personal protection.
