Job Description
Responsible for efficiently collecting and documenting patient samples. This position also is responsible for representing the laboratory in a professional manner while adhering to strict HIPAA guidelines
Essential Job Functions
• Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for fluid samples.
• Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents or other means.
• Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
• Reassure patients and help them relax.
• Find veins that are suitable for puncture.
• Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials and other equipment.
• Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples.
• Verifies patient identity/billing information and testing diagnostics codes prior to creating orders/collecting specimen.
• Records patient data accurately on the requisition forms/electronic lab orders.
• Accurately labels patient specimen and efficiently packs the specimen for transport, shipping or courier service.
• Informs courier service and lab of samples that need to be picked up immediately or drop off all specimen samples to the laboratory physical location.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of collection area, self and supplies.
• Ensures a minimum of 50 (fifty) collection kits on hand, per customer site, for all specimen collection types. o Notifies support team/management when additional supplies are needed.
• Communicates with direct management regarding staffing/customer related concerns.
• Maintains patient confidentiality in dealing with patient information following strict HIPAA guidelines.
• Maintains professionalism while interacting with clinic staff, patients and physicians.
Required Skills/ Qualifications •
Certified and/or professionally trained and experienced phlebotomist. o To perform collections in Columbia, MO must carry active certification(s)
• Completed phlebotomy training course(s) and can provide documentation of completed training.
• High School Graduate
• At least one year phlebotomy/specimen collections experience, with references to experience.
• Knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook
• Familiarity with laboratory procedures, HIPAA guidelines
• Must have a detail orientation, the proven ability to prioritize work and multi-task.
