POSITION: PHLEBOTOMIST
DEPARTMENT: LAB
FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

SCHEDULE: EVERY OTHER FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY, FROM 6:00PM-4:00AM

JOB SUMMARY: Serves patients by collecting and transporting specimens from
an off-site facility for laboratory testing.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to: Laboratory Director

Regular Contact with: All hospital departments and the public

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Draws blood from patients or donors in Nursing Home facility for analysis or other medical purposes: Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
2. Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
3. Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
4. Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag.
5. Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for
subsequent processing.
6. May prick finger to draw blood.
7. Follow the laboratory procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
8. Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies; document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
9. Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
10. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
11. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
12. Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nurse-manager.
13. Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
14. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
15. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying
supervisor of unresolved orders.
16. Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and jcaho standards.
17. All other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Work Experience: Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, move, or carry certain equipment. Ability to move or support patients. Must be able to bend and squat. Prolonged walking and standing. Ability at times to tolerate high levels of stress. Ability to get along with fellow employees on the basis of fair and impartial treatment.

OSHA EXPOSURE CLASS A: EMPLOYEES IN THIS JOB CLASSIFICATION HAVE EXPOSURE TO BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS.
